CSD Weekly Update
WEEK #7, October 2, 2020
Dear Cambrian Families,
Happy October! We have now officially completed our 7th week of school for the 2020-21 school year. On September 21, 2020, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department released an updated version of the COVID-19 Prepared: Reopening of Santa Clara County K-12 Schools for the 2020-21 School Year. I recently updated the Board and community on Cambrian School District's progress the past two weeks, adaptations needed for gradual reopening, current parent and staff survey results, and some next steps/recommendations in supporting the return of students to school campus for in-person instruction.
Cambrian School District has already begun a gradual reopening of students coming to campus:
Cambrian Extended Day program has been in operation for six weeks successfully cohorting.
We have established four locations for child care for all Cambrian Staff during the instructional day in stable cohorts.
Starting Monday, October 5th, high needs students from our schools are returning for in person targeted support during distance learning.
In person 1:1 services and assessments started in September for some Special Education students.
Cambrian School District gradual reopening of students coming to campus:
We are still moving forward to phase in our special day preschool and special day classes, but we have had to move the start date out. While the target dates for these classes are being adapted, families in these specific classes will be contacted in advance for preparation for the return to in person.
I shared that given there are various perspectives as it relates to returning to in person instruction the intent of the recent community and staff survey was to get an overall assessment of individual readiness. Based on the recent survey results and updated Santa Clara County Public Department Health requirements for schools I made the recommendation to slow down the reopening, continue moving forward with a gradual reopening and bring back an adapted timeline to the Board for approval at the October 15th Board Meeting.
The Governing Board unanimously agreed with that recommendation to revisit the approved timeline for returning for in person instruction, consider adopting a revised timeline and take action at the October 15th Board Meeting. A phased-in gradual approach is still emphasized in moving back to in person instruction. Please note, TK-1st will not be starting on October 19th and will be pushed out to a later date. Once a new start date is approved it will be communicated after the October 15th Board Meeting.
In order to make it easier for you as we move forward with the reopening campuses for in person instruction, we created one CSD handbook titled Safely Returning to In Person Instruction that combines all the state/local Public Health Department requirements and health guidelines to support students, staff, and community. We have embedded the recent requirements from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department updated guidance to public schools as districts prepare to reopen campuses. In addition, you will see weekly tips in the CSD newsletter about safety protocols and procedures.
The Cambrian District School website reopening for the 2020-21 School Year is a great resource where you can find a wealth of information as to Santa Clara Public Health Department requirements for K-12 schools, CSD’s reopening handbook, distance learning and hybrid schedules, FAQ and much more.
I will continue to keep you up to date on any plans regarding our gradual reopening of our schools for in person instruction. I am so grateful for your cooperation and support as we continue to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students. We are CAMBRIAN.
SCCOE Parent Guide to Reopening K-12 Schools in Santa Clara County
We want to provide our Cambrian families with as many helpful resources as possible. We are attaching the parent handbook that came out from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department. There is also a Spanish version. Your health and safety is our number one priority.
Helpful Tips from our Cambrian School District Nurse: Handwashing and Face Coverings
Education and promotion of handwashing and the use of face covering is the topic for this week as we prepare for students to return to in-class instruction next week. The children that will begin in-class instruction next week may notice changes that have been made because of COVID. These changes may cause concern, fear, and anxiety.
In order to prepare your child for the upcoming transition, we encourage you to discuss some of the changes they may see in order to help them adjust. We have provided links to discuss changes, such as: social distancing around school, social distancing in the classroom, and seeing others in personal protective equipment.
Please review the CDC video on handwashing. We have provided some child-friendly videos for wearing a mask helps stop the spread of germs and knowing how to wear your face mask correctly. Also, here's a child-friendly video that addresses COVID-19 by a child life specialist from NYU at Langone.
