“Can” You Help Your Community? Northville Civic Concern Food Drive
The Student Lighthouse Community Service Action Team will be sponsoring a food drive to benefit Northville Civic Concern. The drive will run from Feb. 5-16. Please send in unopened boxed or canned goods, as well as paper products like paper towels and tissues and place them in the appropriate boxes near the front of the school. We will be having a competition between upper el. and lower el. to see who can collect the most cans, so make sure to put your items in the correctly labeled box. The winning group will be able to silly string their teacher!
We have also set a school wide goal of collecting 350 items! We are looking forward to synergizing to make this event a success and to help people in our own community.

Dog vs. Cat Library Challenge
In two weeks our library theme will be Cats vs. Dogs. We are going to count how many cats we have vs how many dogs we have. We are starting with 1 dog (Jake) and 0 cats.
Parents - We would like your help to make this week super fun. Please send Ms. Meisel pictures of your pets with their names, JUST PETS, NO KIDS. All pictures will be used at school only. Ms. Meisel's email is meiselki@northvilleschools.org. Thank you!

Do you have any extra pants?
We are running low on spare pants for those unexpected oops moments, and we could really use your help.
If you have any old pants laying around that your kids have outgrown and you're looking to pass on, we'd be forever grateful for the donation.
Drop off any donations at the front office! We appreciate your generosity!

Snow Days and Breakfast Menu - PLEASE READ
When school is cancelled for snow days the following school day's breakfast item(s) will be the breakfast menu item(s) from the previous day (snow day).
For Example: If a parent orders school breakfast for their student for Wednesday and the district has a snow day on Tuesday, all students will receive the breakfast menu item(s) from Tuesday for Wednesday's breakfast which can result in students receiving food items that they are possibly allergic/sensitive to.
This is happening because the breakfast item(s) are prepared/packaged the previous school day and food service does not have time to change out the item(s).
We apologize for the inconvenience, and we are looking into possible solutions.

NWEA Testing Window to Open Soon - Reminder about Vacations
Silver Springs, along with all Northville elementary schools, frequently monitors data to inform instruction. In addition to the daily formative assessments our teachers use to make in-the-moment decisions, we also administer the NWEA three times a year. It is important that students are in school (and rested!) for these dates. District-wide, we will not be making up NWEA testing that is missed because of vacation unless the data is deemed necessary for MTSS decisions.

LEADER IN ME FOCUS FOR THE MONTH - HABIT 3 PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
We will focus on Habit 3 throughout the entire month of January.
The Learning At Home Activity is below. This will be in your child's Monday envelope, or you can click on the image below for a printable version.
January At Home Activity
This month’s Habit: Habit 3 Put First Things First
Activity: Big Rocks
Due Date: January 26th
Habit #3 Put First Things First- "Work First, Then Play"
What this means: Focus on what is important, schedule the important things first. Don’t be a dreamer - stay focused!
“I spend my time on things that are most important.”
“I say no to things I know I should not do.”
“I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan.”
“I am disciplined and organized.”
How can I do this in my life?
1. Do your homework as soon as you come home from school.
2. Do something you have been putting off for a long time.
3. Think about your most important responsibilities. Do them first.
Great Books for Habit #3- Put First Things First
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Pokey and the Spelling Test by Sean Covey
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats
Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London

The Michigan School Meals program supplements the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program, meaning that parents of students who would otherwise be eligible for free or reduced meals should continue to submit applications for free or reduced meals for their students.
