The Quill April 6
embrace - inspire - empower
A Thought or Two from Mr. Nieslanik
As I reflect on March I smile. We had an amazing run of the musical "Big Fish", we were the only 6A school with boys and girls basketball in the OSAA Championships (with the girls winning their 7th State Championship), we had an amazing Unity Week and Diversity Assembly, and our students excelled in all quadrants of the school with highlights from Boys and Girls Basketball, Theatre, Speech and Debate, Winter Guard and Percussion, Choir, Mock Trial, and Band. A special thank you to the students who compose PEAC (Principal's Equity Advisory Council) and Tech Team who spent hours in March planning for and putting on the Diversity Assembly.
We have landed in April! We are quickly moving into the fourth quarter of the year. I can tell that we are inching ourselves closer to Commencement and the end of the school year. April is always an odd month in my work as principal, as I am living in both the present and future tense. I am working in the staffing and budget binders preparing for next year, while at the same time I am penciling thoughts out in regards to Graduation and all of the end-of-the-year senior activities. Speaking of senior activities, I highly encourage all seniors to attend Grad Night. The Senior Parent Grad Night Committee is doing amazing work this year in communicating the event, fundraising, and planning a great evening. If you have not signed up for the event you can do so here.
Until next time,
David
Local Option Levy - May 15
The proposed local option levy is a renewal or replacement of the current local option levy, with the same tax rate of $1.25 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The levy would raise approximately $31 million the first year. Over five years, the levy would raise about $165 million. Visit the BSD website for more information in multiple languages.
BSD Annual Parent Survey
Please take a few moments in the next weeks to complete the BSD Annual Parent Survey. The survey helps us to evaluate our progress in educating your child and planning for the future. Our goal is to ensure that every member of our school community feels welcomed, valued, and informed, so it is important for all parents/guardians to complete the survey. The survey data will be summarized so that each person who answers will remain anonymous.
A link to the 2018 Annual Parent Survey was sent to all valid parent email addresses via SchoolMessenger on Monday, April 2. The deadline to participate is Friday, April 20, 2018. You can view a copy of the survey in both English and Spanish on the Research & Reports webpage.
Student Drivers
The shared parking lot can be confusing, but the spaces on the Conestoga half belong to their patrons, and the spaces along the fence half are designated for Southridge students.
Springtime tends to bring in a bit of light and excitement as well as new drivers, so if our drivers can be considerate in this area, it works out well for everyone. Thank you for your attention to this.

Volunteer Corner
-We are looking for dance volunteers (spring fling, 4/12, and prom, 5/5). Volunteers will provide those thirsty dancers with much needed water.
-We will need volunteers to score anonymous senior scholarship essays. This is an opportunity that can be done from the comfort of your home!
-Mr. Nieslanik has put out a request for several volunteers (approximately 20) who would be interested in sewing simple cloth window coverings to replace the ineffective paper window coverings currently being used in some of the classrooms. The window coverings are a crucial element of safety during an emergency lock down.
-Mock Interview Coordinator, Chris Martin, is looking for professionals from the community to participate in mock interviews, May 16 & 18, 9-11am. For more information contact Mr. Martin, Chris_Martin@beaverton.k12.or.us

A HUGE thank you to all of our dedicated Southridge Volunteers that have already been cleared.

IX18
The inaugural Innovation Expo at Aloha HS, iX18, showcased and celebrated fantastic ideas that are happening today in our schools. Attendees were able to see how technology is being used in classrooms, and the programs and projects that are exciting students and teachers. This first expo far exceeded the organizers hopes. SRHS students' were a big hit when they demonstrated their engineering and programming skills. L to R: Abby Frank, Mason Monnie, Andrew Nguyen, Andre Toban, Mariam Joel, and teacher, Monica Garcia.
VISUAL ARTS STUDENTS
A few weeks ago, out of 7700 submissions state-wide, 27 SRHS art students were recognized for the outstanding work at the state Scholastic Art and Writing show. Those students' works were then shown in New York, where the following students won awards at the national level!
Sarina Carlaw (12th) : 1 gold key (digital art) ; 3 silver keys (digital art)
Olivia Banks (11th): 1 silver key (photography)
Adrienne Reed (12th): 1 silver key (photography)
Jessica Xiao (12th): 1 silver key (painting)
Southridge was the ONLY school (middle and high schools) in Beaverton to receive a gold key (first place) in Visual Arts. This is a huge honor since hundreds of thousands of works were submitted nationally. Sarina Carlaw's piece will on display at Carnegie Hall for a week in June! She and her family will be attending an awards ceremony there.
Way to go, Skyhawks!
SPEECH & DEBATE
Congratulations to Joey Miller who took 1st place in 'Domestic Extemp: US Extemporaneous Speaking' at the Speech & Debate competition over Spring Break. This win has earned him a place at Nationals in Florida the end of June! Good Job!
Unity Week 2018
On Monday, students got to know each other better when every student was given a number. Two other students in the school got the same number. When students found their 'group', they reported to the leadership office together to receive a prize! A large world map was displayed in the fishbowl where students could place a pin in their country of origin, and hundreds of 'compliments' were submitted to be read aloud during lunches. On Tuesday and Thursday, several student groups signed up to perform during lunches.
