Meet an explorer!
By Aarya Phansalkar
Rainforest explorer, Katherine Whitewood, has just returned from her trip to Australia, to visit the Diantree Rainforest. She has kindly offered to share a few words about her experience, with us. She thinks that the Daintree is a wonderous place, which is filled with rare and beautiful creatures. We asked her a few questions about her experience and this is what she said:
DID YOU GO ON A TOUR IN THE RAINFOREST, AND IF SO, WHAT DID YOU SEE?
I did go on a tour in the Daintree Rainforest, and it was absolutely amazing! I saw many wondrous things in the rainforest. There were tropical birds, such as the pied monarch and the varied triller, and so many more! I also saw the golden orb spider! There were so many waterfalls and streams, where I saw an azure kingfisher catching fish. Once I wondered off into the rainforest and saw a cassowary nest. I went closer and I saw three eggs! Then out of nowhere the mother came from behind a tree, and chased me until I was a hundred metres away from her nest!
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST THRILLING EXPERIENCE IN THE DAINTREE?
My most thrilling experience was definitely seeing a musky - rat kangaroo and its young sitting under the shade of large tree. The baby was very cute and the mother was very protective of it. She also seemed very tense when went closer to her and they both soon ran away, into the trees.
HOW MANY WATER SOURCES DID YOU SEE IN THE DAINTREE RAINFOREST?
I saw many water sources in the rainforest! There were too many to count! Once I saw a small swamp wallaby drinking the cool water of a small stream. It's leg was hurt, so we took it to the vet. I even got to pat the cute little mammal!
OVERALL HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE?
It was absolutely thrilling! It was just so amazing to get up close with all these wonderful wild animals, and to see them roam in their natural habitat. I will probably never experience something like this before!
WHY AND WHEN DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO BE A RAINFOREST EXPLORER?
When I was ten I went to a rainforest with my dad, and I loved it! That's when I decided that I wanted to be a rainforest explorer, and I followed my dream ever since. I just loved the feeling of being in a rainforest, observing rare animals, and off course, enjoying yourself. It's an occupation that I enjoy and that is what I think is most important, doing what you love!
We appreciate Miss Katherine Whitewood's inspiring words and hope she continues her currier of exploration. Soon she will be on her flight back to Switzerland and we wish her best of luck for the future!!!
