October Message from Mr. Henderson
Hello Frog Pond Families.
October is always an exciting month in an elementary school. Just a few of things we will be celebrating are the National Week of Respect, Fire Prevention Week, and Red Ribbon Week. In addition, school picture day will be October 17th, and fall parties will be held toward the end of the month. Class party sign up forms were available at back to school night. If you were not able to attend that night and would like to sign up for a party, please contact your child’s teacher to see if space is available. The annual Halloween Parade will be held on October 31st beginning at 8:30am. Grades K through 2 will parade in costume out front of the school. Families are welcome to attend this fun event.
In case you haven’t heard, we have started a Lunch Buddy program. Family members are invited to come in and have lunch with their student. Click here .http://signup.com/go/eTrKAqv for more information. If you are coming into the school for any reason, please be sure to bring a current form of ID.
On October 18th, Frog Pond is proud to host the 2nd Annual Open House. This event is will be hosted by the Maximilian Foundation and will include a presentation to parents, informational sessions provided by our teachers and many community organizations will be on hand to answer questions. Activities are planned for the children, door prizes and refreshments will be offered. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
Sincerely,
Troy Henderson

MRS. REGINA NIELSEN-SCIENCE LAB
STEAM LAB NEWS
OCTOBER 2017
Our Kindergarten Class is working on an Engineer Design Process...they are drawing design plans for their inventions!
IMPORTANT SAFETY RULES!
We always walk in the STEAM Lab and respect each other’s space.
We cover our eyes with goggles and our hands with gloves when necessary.
We never taste anything or put anything in our mouths, eyes, ears or nose.
We use tools, utensils and materials mindfully with respect to ourselves and others.
We share materials with each other and we work respectfully with each other in our groups. We give each other encouragement and compliments.
Whatever we take out and use we put back immediately when we are finished.
If we need something that is not readily available, we ask Mrs. Nielsen for the item first.
If we spill or break something, we tell Mrs. Nielsen immediately.
We wash our hands if we have had a spill or have anything messy on our hands.
At the end of our session, we clean-up quickly and neatly for the next class coming in.
*It is suggested that your child have an old shirt or T-shirt to wear as a smock on STEAM Lab days just in case the activity gets messy…..but FUN!
FROG POND'S GOOD EGG'S!!!
LIBRARY PICKS FROM OUR OWN LIBRARIAN MRS. MARTIN FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER
These books are sure to please our K-6 readers! Remember READING IS FUN!!!
For grades 4-6
Fountas & Pinnell level - V
Per Scholastic: Wonder is the fictional story of August (Auggie) Pullman, a 10-year-old with a very different-looking face—the result of a chromosomal abnormality and an illness—and his journey from the nest of homeschooling to the wilds of middle school.
Wonder is one of my favorite books and one that I think everyone should read!
I am very excited to read the new book Ugly that will be at the book fair! Ugly is atrue story of an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face.
For grades K-3
The Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey
Fountas & Pinnell level - P
Per scholastic: They sound like bad guys, they look like bad guys . . . and they even smell like bad guys. But Mr. Wolf, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Snake, and Mr. Shark are about to change all of that...
Mr. Wolf has a daring plan for the Bad Guys' first good mission. They are going to break two hundred dogs out of the Maximum Security City Dog Pound. Will Operation Dog Pound go smoothly? Will the Bad Guys become the Good Guys? And will Mr. Snake please stop swallowing Mr. Piranha?!
This book is funny and interesting and shows the struggle of doing bad versus good...what will they do? There are now 5 books in this series and I am excited to read the other 2!

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
Rules for Safe Pupil Transportation
The Transportation Liaison and Bus Driver are responsible for the safety, welfare, conduct and control of the pupils they are transporting. Therefore, the following rules will be strictly enforced:
- Drivers will maintain their posted schedule as accurately as possible. Students should be at their bus stops ten (10) minutes prior to pickup time. Drivers will not wait for tardy students.
- Conduct yourself in a safe manner while waiting, and respect the property of others.
- Never stand in the roadway while waiting for the bus.
- Do not move toward the bus at the loading zone until the bus has come to a complete stop and the door has opened.
- Pupils, who must cross the road to board or depart from the bus, will cross in front of the bus only on the signal of the bus driver.
- Pupils will line up single file to get on and off the bus. Crowding and pushing is not permitted.
- All backpacks are to be worn on and off the bus. While riding, backpacks are to be taken off and kept on your lap or the floor and should remain closed.
- Aisles are to be kept free from backpacks, books, lunch boxes, etc. (musical instruments will be placed under a seat, or held during the bus trip).
- When permitted by the bus driver windows may be opened no more than six inches.
- Pupils will only ride their assigned bus. Any changes must be approved by a building administrator and/or the transportation liaison.
- Pupils will board and/or depart the bus at their designated bus stop. To leave the bus at any other stop, the pupil must have a note from his/her parent and approval from a building administrator and/or transportation liaison.
- Bus riding is a privilege, which may be revoked. Permission to ride the bus may be taken away for unacceptable/unsafe behavior.

STOP BULLYING!!!
Mrs. Wade’s 2nd Grade Class has news to share...
What a FANTASTIC month we have had! We met new friends and learned a lot!
We are meeting the Standards with Rigor and having a blast while we’re doing it!
In Science we did an exciting experiment together with Ms. Finke’s 2nd grade class.
We explored the Principles of Matter (Solids, Liquids and Gases) with an experiment called the EXPLODING LUNCH BAG!!!!
I had to wear protective gear to combine 2 substances, a liquid and a solid, to cause a chemical reaction which formed a new substance with different properties - GAS!!!!
(Specifically we learned it was newly created carbon dioxide.)
We also enjoyed a visit from a student’s (Dominick Italiano) Dad! Not only is he a talented well known artist, but he also had no problem jumping into teaching a Math Lesson with me on our Interactive New Line Boards! So parents don’t be shy. Please come in and join the fun!
Michael Wilbert was the first student in class who celebrated his birthday on Ginzy! Check out the interactive cake decorating. Michael was even able to blow out his candles interactively!
Awesome!

ATTENTION PARENTS OF KINDERGARTEN & 1ST GRADE STUDENTS
Should your child have a bathroom accident, they may need a change of clothes! We have a very limited supply of clothing and undergarments and we prefer not to have to call a parent to pick up their child at school because of this issue. Please send your child to school with a complete change of clothing in their backpack.

"OFF THE SHELF" - A WHOLE LOT OF LEARNING GOING ON!!!
Dear Parents and Families:
Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
· Set the example. Let children see you read.
· Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up
with changing tastes and reading skills.
· Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books
to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair dates: Friday October 13 – Friday October 20, 2017
Shopping hours: During school 8:00am – 2:30pm
Special activities: Family Night Wednesday October 18 5:30pm – 8:00pm
If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair. Our Online Fair is available from Monday October 9 to Saturday October 28.
We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.
Sincerely,
