LSES Weekly Update

Exceptional things happen here!

Week of May 23-27

A peek in to the 1st grade...

We are having fun learning about farm life. We have learned about what kinds of things you would see on a farm from different types of equipment and animals you might see to what types of crops farmers might plant. First graders are learning how to make healthy choices when they eat. We have learned about the different food groups and how much they should eat each day from those groups. We made a healthy plate of food with clay when we worked with the Right Brain Initiative artist. We will be able to apply some of the things we have learned when we go on a field trip to the Plumper Pumpkin Patch. While there, students will get to take a tour of the farm, see some animals, plant their own pumpkin seed, and learn about bees and what their job is on the farm.

First graders are also studying about friendship. We are reading Owen & Mzee: The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship and Koko's Kitten. We have studied what it means to be a good friend and how to deal with loosing a friend.

Book Fair

From May 9-13, the PTO hosted a Buy One, Get One Free Book Fair. This fundraiser is an in-school event that brings the joy and excitement of reading right to our students. Scholasticʼs mission is to help children become avid readers and lifelong learners. They do this by bringing a bookstore to our school and offering affordable books based on characters and subjects kids love and want to read about. The PTO receives a percentage of all Fair sales for hosting the Book Fair, which they can take in cash or spend on books or other supplies. The PTO always spends the money they earn buying more books for students to explore. Teachers are invited to come and shop the Book Fair to supplement their classroom libraries and the school library. We would not be able to enjoy all of these books without all of our parent and community volunteers that help to run the Book Fair. The PTO would like to thank all of the volunteers that give their time to make this successful. The PTO is looking for a new Book Fair coordinator for next school year. If you are interested in coordinating or helping with future Book Fairs, please contact the PTO at golynxpto@gmail.com.

Kindergarten Orientation

Big image

Last week we welcomed the newest members to our Lynx family at Kindergarten Orientation. During this orientation session, children got to meet some of their new classmates and teachers, have story time with Mrs. Lopez, and participate in some introductory kindergarten activities. The kindergarten teachers presented parents with an overview of the kindergarten program and parents learned about each aspect of kindergarten and what they can expect throughout the year. Mrs. Brodniak gave a presentation on the Dual Language and the English+ programs at our school and answered any questions parents had about these programs. Incoming kindergartners were given a bag of supplies so they can practice writing, coloring and cutting over the summer so they can be better prepared for the first day of school.

Career Day

Calling all Lincoln Street parents and friends! An incredible opportunity awaits you on Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10 when you become a Career Day speaker and share your career with our students. We are recruiting volunteers for this school wide program which runs from 12:00PM-2:00PM both days. If you would like to share the experience you have had with your career, please contact Meredith Berry at (503) 844-1160.
