Prohibition
To stay out of the slammer, don’t get hammered
What was the Prohibition?
The prohibition was where there was a nationwide ban on the production, importation, and transportation of any beverages that include any, even the slightest bit of alcohol from 1920 through 1933.
What was the reasoning?
The Dry's, The Anti-Saloon League, The Women's Christian Temperance Movement, and other advocates protested for quite awhile to ban alcohol. Everybody thought that removing the consumption of alcohol would lower crime rates and result in better families.
Why'd the prohibition come to an end?
What many people didn't think about was what other ways would this ban effect people? Due to banning the making, transportation, etc., many people lost their jobs. Almost all of the expectations of the prohibition were false.
How people got around the bans
During this time, many people became furious about not being able to buy liquor. Of course they'd find a way around the bans. They created what were called speakeasies. Speakeasies were basically secret saloons that men could go into to drink. If you were to go in, you'd have a special knock to let everyone know that you're not a cop, wife, etc. There would be Bootleggers, or people that would sell alcohol to people and speakeasies.
