Award-winning books in our collection

Book Award Voting

Students in grades 1-5 who have read 5 or more of the 2012-13 nominees will vote for their favorite during the first full week of February. The results from LMES will be added to the state-wide results of participating elementary schools in South Carolina. The winning picture book and the winning children's book will be announced at the SCASL (South Carolina Association of School Librarians) conference in March. Stay tuned for Mrs. Matney to announce the winners!

P.S. Even though voting occurs in February, keep reading this year's nominees for credit in the SC Book Award Challenge that goes through May.

February themed book lists

February is a short but busy month! Find themed book lists for Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day, Black History Month, and Children's Dental Health Month.

Scholastic TrueFlix

Our school now has a subscription for Scholastic TrueFlix! TrueFlix is the web-based version of Scholastic's True Books series with corresponding informational videos in the areas of science and social studies. Each of the 80+ ebooks has a read-aloud feature with text highlighting (that can be turned on or off) and is paired with a short video to deliver content in a multimedia format. Content is ideal for students in grades 3-5. Each nonfiction pairing also has lesson plans, encyclopedia articles, web links, project ideas, activities, and quizzes.

For immediate access within LMES, click here. For remote access at home, visit Contact Mrs. Matney for the username and password.

Google Story Builder

Create your own virtual stories using the Google Story Builder. Story Builder does not require an account or any personal information, making it perfect for educational uses. Students can use it for creative writing exercises or teachers can use to create quick lesson intros. Add up to ten different “participants” with customized names and then write your story within ten "action dialogues." Choose background music (or no music at all) and give the story a title. When finished, share the animated story with others through a unique Google URL. It's that easy!
