Notes of Interest from Ms. Guerrette's Class

Kicking Off a New Year!

Welcome to the roller-coaster ride that is 4th grade! The students have been challenged with three overarching pirate words and three school-wide focus words to live by. Ask your students about being FEARLESS, DETERMINED, TEAMMATES, RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, and SAFE. Rather than have students work under a long list of rules, I often point students back to these ideas in order to size themselves up and determine whether or not they are pulling their weight on our pirate crew. Fourth graders are exciting and fun, but they can be unpredictable also as we navigate the year. I'm going to expect a lot of stretching and growing from each one. Please help me by talking to your students and trying to find out from them what kind of learning is going on in our room!

Scholastic Book Club

Students will bring home flyers from Scholastic Book Clubs once a month. I offer this opportunity for families because many want to provide their students with interesting reading material, and the Scholastic prices are good bargains. Did you know you can also search the Scholastic Book Club website for other titles that may not be featured in the monthly flyer?

If you are someone who does online shopping, you can submit your book order with our class order online each month. When parents order online, our class earns free books and some extra bonuses. The books still arrive with our class order, and I will send the books home with students. (Unless you give me different directions--I'm good at secrets!) Our class code is GYPQ7. You will need that when you register.

Books We've Been Reading

  • Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Judy Blume
  • The Day-Glo Brothers, Chris Barton
  • John's Secret Dreams: The Story of John Lennon, Doreen Rappaport
  • The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, William Kamkwamba
  • The Dot, Peter Reynolds
