Hearst Family Update
December 20, 2020
Good evening Owl families,
The Hearst Reopen Community Corps had our third of four meetings last Wednesday and has developed a plan to gradually reopen our school building to more students and staff in Term 3, with the hopes of bringing back additional students and staff in Term 4. The plan is built upon three principles that we consistently heard prioritized by students, staff, and families in reopening conversations - safety, consistency, and socialization. This plan will allow us to open one classroom at each grade, K-5, in order to serve at least 10 of our students in each of those grade levels who are struggling with virtual learning and need in person support to be successful. We are intentionally reopening a small number of classrooms in order to ensure that the building is as safe as possible for students and staff who will be returning in person and because this also minimizes disruption to the current virtual learning model, given that the majority of Hearst students will remain virtual in Term 3. The plan is awaiting approval from central office and once it is approved, I will share additional details about it, hopefully just after the upcoming winter break. I'll also hold town hall conversations with families in the first weeks of January to explain what this plan may mean for you and your family. Please look for additional details in my next update.
Additionally, I learned late on Friday that two staff, one substitute and one DCPS central office staffer, have been assigned to Hearst to staff a third CARE classroom to open in January, likely on January 6. Beginning on Tuesday and continuing over winter break, we will offer these additional seats to prioritized students matched in the initial CARE lottery held last month.
One final note - a belated thanks to Ms. Prince, our PTA, and all of the families who donated to the Annual Toy Drive this month. The generosity of our Hearst community is appreciated!
Thank you for your continued partnership and I hope you've had a great weekend,

This year, the survey has moved to an electronic format using the Seamless platform and will be open for completion from October 30th to December 22nd. All DCPS families should complete one survey per child, not household, in their preferred language and submit by Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Please complete the survey using the links below:
