PLAYGROUND AND FIELD
Playground Reminders for Before and After School As the days get warmer, more students remain after school to play. This is wonderful to see, but please make sure that there is active adult supervision during this time. We want the children to have fun, while still maintaining a safe environment. Active supervision is a strategy that works; it helps ensure safety and positive play experiences for all. At times there has been overly aggressive play taking place before/after school. While we want students to enjoy the playground and develop their social skills, we ask that adults intervene when inappropriate and/or dangerous behavior occurs. It is important for students to recognize the importance of appropriate behavior whether it is before, during or after school. Thank you for your partnership in making the playground/soccer field a safe and fun experience for everyone. | Windows and Doors Please be mindful that after school clubs and teacher meetings take place each day after school. Please make sure that children are not playing right next to the school windows and/or banging on the doors as it is a distraction for all. We appreciate your support and cooperation. Thank you. | Woods and Sticks Please know that we have asked the students to refrain from removing sticks from the woods. Each time sticks are removed and placed near the playground/field, Mr. Mark and Mr. Nick need to collect and return them to the woods. Our grounds need to be cleared in order to ensure a safe area for recess and community use of the fields. In addition, students have been cut and/or have tripped over the sticks. Thank you again for your continued support and ongoing efforts in helping to ensure safety and positive play experiences for all. |

Mental Health Awareness Month and the Benefits of Self Care Practices
Wednesday, May 25, 2022
7:00-8:30 PM
For many of us, self-care means doing the things that we enjoy most to improve our quality of life. But several things can prevent us from engaging in regular self-care; whether it be prioritizing the care of others over ourselves, simply not having time, or may not be maximizing the effects of our self-care activities. Join some of the clinical staff from High Focus Centers as we present some of the evidence-based, therapeutic principles of self-care from licensed therapists.

REMINDERS
Pick Up Notification If you are changing your child's pick up routine, please notify your child's teacher and afterschool program in advance. If you need to make a change once school is in session for the day, please call the main office at 908-709-6969. The office will relay the message. Please do not email same day changes, as teachers do not always have the ability to look at their email during the instructional day. | APPOINTMENTS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY Please try to make appointments after school hours, however if that is not possible, please give the teacher and office advance notice. This will allow the teacher time to prepare the appropriate materials for the child to take home and/or adjust assessments that may have been scheduled that day. | Start Times at BASPlease know that doors open at BAS at 8:20 AM each morning. It is important to arrive between 8:20 AM and 8:30 AM in order to support a smooth transition into school for your child. When children enter after 8:30 AM, a parent/guardian must sign in the child in the main office. Arriving late may lead to disruption for the child and the classroom. Please try your best to enter through your assigned door between 8:20 AM and 8:30 AM each morning. Thank you! |

Annual Health Screenings
According to the N.J. Department of Education, the goal of school health services is to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and staff.
Since health and intellectual development of children are interrelated, the following is a list of state mandated screening services provided by the school nurse.
Height, Weight and B/P: all grade levels, including preschool
Hearing Screening: Preschool through 3rd grade
Vision Screening: Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade.
Scoliosis Screening: 5th grade
We will be conducting health screenings throughout the school year. In order to minimize loss of instructional time and outdoor activities we will try to schedule screenings at times when bad weather conditions restrict outdoor recess or on days when there is a substitute teacher. In order to prevent anxiety among students regarding these trips to the nurse, please let them know that these screenings are nothing to worry about and will not include any "shots". Students will be called to the nurse's office in pairs since this seems to make them more comfortable.
Deviations from normal will be reported to the parents as per state guidelines. Parents who wish to opt-out of any mandated screenings, must notify the school nurse in writing, and provide the data from their healthcare practitioner.
UPDATED Covid 19 Reporting FormHere is the new form to report positive Covid-19 cases and close contacts. This revised form will streamline the process for you, as well as the nurses. Once the form is submitted, you will receive an email from the nurses providing instructions. Do not send your child into school while you await instructions from the nursing staff. The greatest assistance you can provide is to keep your child home when they are sick. | Lunch and Recess Lunch: Please know that students will eat lunch in the gym at 3+ feet apart. If you decide to take your child home for lunch, please let the homeroom teacher know ahead of time. Recess: Students will continue to go outside for recess even when it is cold. Please make sure to dress students for the cold weather as we want to get them outside as much as possible. Also, note that the fields can get muddy. Please keep this in mind when dressing your children. If it is necessary to remain inside, students will have indoor recess in the classroom. The BAS PTA purchased multiple items for children to use during this time while maintaining an appropriate distance. | Instruction for Students on QuarantineGiven the number of students who are currently quarantined, it makes sense to shift from the home instruction model to a “live streaming” model for those who are quarantined in grades 3 through 12. This new model will be in place for the month of January and then the District will reassess moving forward. Please understand that this allows students who are quarantining to listen in on the class. This model does not include two-way communication. Your child is always welcome to follow up with the teacher at a later time and their teacher will do everything possible to assist your child upon their return. Grades Pre-K through 2 will continue with the home instruction model when an individual is quarantined. Principals will reach out with more information. |
