Art with Mrs. Steffensen and Mrs. Nail
Your children have been busy weaving and stitching during these last few weeks of Art. We have also made good use of our Makerbot Replicator 2, printing a 3D object to be raffled off to a lucky winner at the end of each class.
Look for some exciting additions to our school hallways in the fall. The Peacekeepers created artwork that will be added to the area outside of the Media Center. The Fifth Grade legacy project will be installed in the Atrium at the front of our school. And plans are underway for the creation of a mural celebrating our school focus on reading.
As we leave school for the summer, we hope your plans include enjoying some art with your family. We are so fortunate to have a world class art museum right here in Atlanta. “Painter and Poet: The Wonderful World of Ashley Bryan” is currently on exhibit at the High Museum of Art (see picture). The Center for Puppetry Arts has created puppets inspired by the artwork of Ashley Bryan. They are waiting for you to create your own story! Beginning June 3rd, there will also be a collection of Andy Warhol’s prints on exhibit. Ask your student artist if they know what the “pop” in “Pop Art” represents. Objects from everyday life make Warhol’s work one of the best representations of art from popular culture. Find museum information here http://www.high.org/
In addition to finding art in museums and galleries, look for it everywhere on your family’s summer travels. Airports and hotels are great places to find interesting sculptures and other artwork. Be on the lookout for amazing sights in the natural world as well. We are already looking forward to hearing about your adventures in the fall!
Hopefully, your summer plans include creating art of your own. Your children may already be enrolled in art camps or other art experiences. If you’re looking for some fun drop in experiences, check out My Clayground and All Fired Up. Both are located right here in our area and a great place to beat the summer heat while you create fused glass or clay pieces of your own or paint pottery. You can find their information here https://myclayground.com/ and here http://allfiredupart.com/index.php
Have a safe and wonderful summer break!

Music with Mr. DeStefano and Mrs. Ingraham
What a busy month it has been! One of the best compliments I have ever received was from a fifth grader who was upset because he was pulled for early dismissal during music class on the last day of school. Teaching and learning continues until the last class on the last day!
Highlights of the past month include:
Fifth graders created musical cartoons using iPads and the Shadow Puppet app. Their videos can be watched on my Seesaw page using the QR codes that were send home.
Fourth graders learned folk dance from each of their field day countries. It was a fun way to get to learn more of each country’s culture.
Third graders have learned a few notes on the recorder and are ready to continue playing in fourth grade.
Second graders learned about the musical alphabet, sang “I Can’t Spell Hippopotamus” and had a music alphabet spelling contest.
First graders learned about Camille Saint Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals” through movement, singing and listening. Animals included the frog, lion, birds and dinosaur.
Kindergarten performed their Bremen Town Musicians Concert! To finish out the year, we played xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels to help tell the story of The Hairy Scary Monster.
Whether you attend a concert, sing in the car on a road trip, enjoy musical fun at a day camp or dance in the grass, we hope that music will be part of your summer vacation. Have a great summer!

We had a great Field Day last week. Thanks to all of the volunteers, teachers and students who made it a fun day for everyone.
Thank you for a great school year. Please have a happy, healthy, & safe summer. Please try to stay active and enjoy your family. 5th graders: good luck in your next chapter and come back to visit as often as you can. We’ll see everybody else in early August.
Kindly,
