Youth Access Library Cards Coming to ISB
Exciting news: middle and high school students at ISB will be receiving a Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) library card called a Youth Access Card! Students will be able to use their new library cards to access a wealth of resources at the library and online; this is a great opportunity for them to extend their learning beyond the classroom walls.
WCCLS Youth Access cards will be distributed to students who do not currently have a WCCLS card during Advisory on February 26 or 27. This video and the flyer below were created to provide additional information about the Youth Access Cards. You can also visit the District's Public Library Cards web page or contact your local WCCLS library for more details.
Security Upgrade Update
ISB is fortunate to have implemented several security upgrades courtesy of the current bond. Last spring our classroom door locks were upgraded and now lock from the inside. Over the summer and fall you may have noticed the installation of key card readers and a second set of interior entrance doors.
Earlier this month, our key card system was activated which has provided additional security for our school. Students are adapting well to the changes we've made in procedures for accessing our buildings during the school day, however there are a few ways this may impact our families.
The school opens for student arrival at 6:40 am. Students arriving after 7:30 am must enter through the main entrance and office. All visitors will use this same entrance and need to ring a bell and be admitted to the office by staff who can interact with you via a monitor once you've entered the vestibule. You will find the monitor just to the left of the office door.
IB Corner
Teaching and learning in the MYP is centered around conceptual understanding in context. Global contexts provide the context for conceptual learning. When teachers select a global context for their units of study, they are addressing the following questions:
Why are these concepts important?
Why is this material important for the students to understand?
Why do students care about this topic?
How do we make the content students are learning relevant to their everyday lives?
The global contexts are the lens through which a unit of instruction is taught. There are six global contexts:
Identities and relationships explores who we are, and our relationships with friends, families, communities, and cultures.
Orientation in space and time explores where we are in place and time, our histories, and the interconnectedness of cultures through time.
Personal and cultural expression explores how we express ourselves and how different cultures express important aspects of their culture.
Scientific and technical innovation explores how the world works, the natural world and it’s laws, and the interaction between the natural world and human societies.
Globalization and sustainability explores the interconnectedness of human-made systems and economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.
Fairness and development explores our rights and responsibilities in the sharing of finite resources and the relationships within and between global and local communities.
Learner Profile of the Month
This month, the learner profile focus is on being a communicator.
Definition: We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.
Student challenge: Brainstorm ways that you communicate.
Students, reflect on the questions below:
In what ways do you communicate without words?
How do you communicate what you want to communicate?
What is your strongest mode of communication? What is your weakest mode of communication?
Are you a good listener?
This month, practice being a clear and confident communicator with those around you.
Yearbook Wants to Hear Your Stories!
Send in your stories and memories to the ISB Yearbook Committee. You can share your musical accomplishments, cultural celebrations, community service, striking creations, ANYTHING! It can be an independent activity or a group engagement. Please provide a brief description as well as a few high-quality photographs to isb.yearbookeditors@gmail.com. If you are a parent, please also include the email at which we can reach your student. Yearbook officers will interview students during AT or after school on a Monday (after-school transportation not provided) to learn more about their stories. Submissions will be closed on Sunday, March 15. If you have any questions, you can contact the Yearbook president, Rachel Lee, at 418575@bsd48.org
High School Student Survey
High school students will be surveyed this year by accessing a link through a Canvas announcement. The survey will be available in English and Spanish. The survey window is February 3-June 5.
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school under the Annual Surveys tab and is posted at https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountabiity/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify Scott Gladney at scott_carey-gladney@beaverton.k12.or.us.
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountabiity/research-reports
Después de revisar la encuesta, si usted no quiere que su hijo participe, por favor notifique a Scott Gladney at scott_carey-gladney@beaverton.k12.or.us.

Handy Links
Snack Survey
In our last survey you asked about snacks - there will definitely be snacks at Grad Night! In fact, we have another handy survey to find out exactly which snacks folks like best: Snack Survey Seniors will have dinner at the start of GN2020, and there will be a variety of food and beverage options available for the duration of the event.
Help Needed
We need a few sophomore and junior parents to help set up the venue while the committee is at graduation celebrating with our seniors! It's a short but critical portion of the event, and they'll gain valuable information for planning their own upcoming GN event. Let us know if you know anyone who might be interested.
