# Year 10 Semester One Exam Revision

### Revision Guidelines

## Task notification and Formula Sheet

The test will consist of short answer questions, some of which require you to show working out. If you do not show working you may only receive part of the total allocated marks even if you answer is correct.

You will be supplied with a one page formula sheet which will contain relevant formula required for the task. You are still advised to learn the formulas, as it is possible that you may need to use a formula that is not on the formula sheet.

The format will be five evenly weighted questions from each of the five topics studied this year.

Questions from assessment tasks one and two may be included in the exam, so you are advised to use these assessment tasks to prepare.

**The topics included are:**

- Surds (chapter one)
- Consumer arithmetic (chapter two)
- Co-ordinate Geometry (chapter three)
- Surface area and Volume (chapter four)
- Products and Factors (chapter five)

## What to complete:

I have decided NOT to do a separate revision sheet, instead I've put together these guidelines to help you prepare for your assessment task. How much or little you complete is ultimately up to you, but in my experience, success in mathematics come from hard work, and this hard work needs to take place over a period of time. You're MUCH better off doing 10-15 minutes a night for three weeks, than six hours the night before the exam.

**For each of the topics complete the following:**

- Chapter Review Set from the textbook
- Review your assessment task for each topic
- Complete the Hotmaths test assigned for each topic

It's a good idea to have your formula sheet with you when you revise so you get familiar with it.

It's also a good idea to do some extra practise on the areas you feel weakest in/most confused about.

## Approaches to studying

- A good idea is to start with the topics you feel least confident with, or the topics that you remember the least, for many of you this will be
**surds**and consumer arithmetic. - Start by doing a general overview of each topic. Work through some of the questions on the review set and identify your areas of strength and weakness.
- Now is also a good time to review your assessment tasks for each topic, noting down the questions you struggled with so you can work on them.
- Spend some time addressing your areas of weakness to improve your confidence with them.
- Make annotations on your formula sheet and write down any other formulas you need to know.
- Once you've gained confidence with one topic, move on to the next and repeat this process.
- Once you've used the review sets complete the HotMaths quizzes as a way of testing what you've learnt.
- If there's still some areas you're struggling with do some more practice on those.

I like to repeat this process of doing more general study, then more specific study, until I feel confident with all aspects of the test

**Monday, week 5:** receive task notification (23/05/2015)

__Week 5:__ review topics on assessment task 1 + complete chapter 1 and 2 review sets

__Week 6__: review topics on assessment task 2 + complete chapter 3 and 4 review sets

- Wednesday (1/06): Chapter 5 review set (in class)
- Friday (3/06): Chapter 1 revision (in class)
- Make sure you have all review sets done by the end of the week

__Week 7__:

- Monday (6/06): Chapter 2 revision (in class)
- Tuesday (7/06): Chapter 3 and 4 revision (in class)
- Make sure you have the Hotmaths quizzes done by your exam

## What to do if you're stuck

- Look for some relevant examples in your textbook or notes
- Ask a friend
- Have a look on YouTube for a video explaining the concept
- Have a google
- Jump on Hotmaths and look up the topic and complete a walk through
- Look up the Smore for the topic: chapter 3 is here, chapter 4 is here, and chapter 5 is here
- Identify at which point you get confused and practise some questions on that
- If you've worked through all of these steps and you're STILL confused, ask me.

I want you to develop skills in becoming independent learners who have a range of strategies upon which you can draw when you get a bit stuck with your work. Slow down, identify what is confusing you, and work through the strategies to clarify your understanding
