The Cougar's Den
October 2017
Principal's Corner
The school year is well underway and it has been a pleasure getting to know the students and seeing their accomplishments!
September was an exciting month. We held our first honor roll breakfast which is traditionally held once a quarter. It recognized the students from fourth quarter of the 2016-2017 school year. We had 109 students make the honor roll by achieving a 3.0 GPA or above. Those students were invited to attend the breakfast. Our staff donated, prepared, and served the food for the breakfast. It is a great event that promotes and recognizes our staff and students dedication to academics and citizenship!

Title One Parent Notification of Highly Qualified Staff
As a parent of a student attending a school receiving federal program funds, you have the legal right to know:
· Is my child’s teacher licensed to teach the grades and subject(s) assigned?
· Is my child’s teacher teaching with a provisional license, meaning the state has waived requirements for my child’s teacher?
· What is the college major of my child’s teacher(s)?
· What degree or degrees do my child’s teachers hold?
· If there are instructional aides working with my child, what are their qualifications?
· If my child is or will be taught for 4 or more consecutive weeks this year by a teacher who is not highly qualified, will I be notified in a timely manner?
To request the state qualifications of your child’s teacher(s) or instructional aide(s), please contact Derek Gardner at Frank Church High School.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) System
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a proven college readiness system, established over 35 years ago, that uses research-based strategies and curriculum to help close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID is a school-wide approach to curriculum and rigor that impacts more than 1.2 million students in K-12 and 40 post-secondary institutions.
TRiO Programs
The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.
Boise National College Fair
All juniors will be released from class to ride a bus and attend the Boise National College Fair on Wednesday, November 1, at Expo Idaho. Over 200 colleges and universities from around the country will be available for students to ask about financial aid, campus housing, programs of study and more.
Extended Day Tutoring
Starting September 12th our Academic Interventionists will be on hand in the Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:10 and in the Study Lab Wednesday mornings from 7:15 – 8:00.
Students can come and work on their missing assignments or get the extra instruction they might need. Snacks are available and each time they attend Extended Day, students will be entered in a drawing for a free Idaho Pizza Company personal pizza for lunch once a week. Don't wait until the end of quarter to get help or get caught up. Start the quarter off right and get that credit without last minute stress.
Frank Church is now a community school!
We are the 5th school in the Boise School District to become a community school.
What is a Community School?
A community school is a central place in which children, youth, and families receive a range of supports and services to meet their needs and expand learning opportunities to students during the school day.
Community schools offer a food pantry, clothing closet, as well as other basic needs items to students, their families, and the surrounding community. This year at Frank Church, we will be working on developing relationships with other agencies to provide health, dental, and nutritional services to students and their families. We are excited to become a part of the growing movement of community schools and to connect youth and families to resources in our community!
Boise Public Library Cards
We had a great response for library cards at parent/teacher conferences on September 21st. 85 people filled out the form and will receive new or updated library cards this month.
It is never too late to get a Boise Public Library card. Fill out the simple form any time and your student's card will be delivered to them at school.
If you have questions about this collaboration, please feel free to contact your school librarian Mrs. Bothwell (kristin.bothwell@boiseschools.org) or district librarian Erin Downey (erin.downey@boiseschools.org).
