Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day
The cities and school districts of Royal Oak and Berkley are proud to announce the 6th annual joint event to honor and remember Dr. King on Monday, January 16, 2023. The community is invited to honor Dr. King through learning and action during “A Day On, Not a Day Off.” The day will begin with a donation drive-thru at Berkley High School (2325 Catalpa Dr), starting at 9:00 AM and ending at approximately 11:30 AM.
At 9:30 AM, guests are invited to participate in a freedom walk through the Berkley High School neighborhood. The first 250 guests will receive a commemorative event button. All ages and members of the community are welcome to attend.
Donations can also be purchased through an Amazon Wish List and mailed right to the Royal Oak Schools Administrative Offices. Use this link to buy specific items from the donation list.
For those unable to attend in person, a virtual presentation will be hosted on the Berkley Schools and Royal Oak Schools Facebook pages. The virtual presentation will include a keynote speech by Cornelius Godfrey, Oakland Schools Diversity and Equity Consultant, a presentation by State Senator, Mallory McMorrow, performances by Berkley Schools student choirs, messages from Royal Oak and Berkley schools student diversity groups, and more. Donation bins are also located in each of the Royal Oak Schools buildings.
The event committee is collecting donations to support the following groups:
- Redford Brightmoor Initiative
- Cass Community Social Services
- Judson Center
- Gleaners Community Food Bank
Donations items requested:
- Non-perishable food: Canned goods, pasta, peanut butter, jelly, granola bars, boxed food items
- Home items: Toilet paper, dish soap, paper towels, laundry detergent
- Toiletries: Shampoo/conditioner (including the following brands: Shea moisture, As I Am, Curls, Aunt Jackie's), deodorant, shaving cream, feminine products
- Diapers and pull-ups: All sizes, no opened packages
- New children's books: Infant through middle school age
- Clothing: Socks (all sizes), underwear (men and children), winter hats (adult)
Items will be collected through 11:30 AM and delivered by volunteers that day.
Following the walk, the public is invited to participate in service projects at Berkley High School, which will include donation sorting, blanket making for those in need and card making for Veterans and first responders.
ROCK Bands
Our first ROCK Bands will take place this Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. The students will get to meet all the students that will be in their group as well as their teacher mentor and work on team-building activities. This program will meet monthly and focus on building positive character traits, learning to work with others, and providing an extra adult with which the students can talk and make a positive connection.
4th/5th Grade Vocal Music Concert
We are so excited to be able to host an in-person music concert again at Upton! Our 4th & 5th Grade students will be performing a Winter Themed Concert on Wednesday, January 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria. We look forward to seeing you there!
PTA Bingo Night!
Our PTA will be hosting Bingo Night on Friday, January 20, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Come and enjoy an hour of fun!

Kindergarten/Developmental Kindergarten (DK) Parent Information Night
Enrollment for Kindergarten/Developmental Kindergarten (DK) 2023-24 School Year
Royal Oak Schools is pleased to welcome children and their families to kindergarten. Kindergarten enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year begins on Thursday, January 26, 2023. District-wide enrollment for all kindergarten programs, including Developmental Kindergarten, is processed through our Central Enrollment Office. Elementary transfer requests will be between January 26 - February 28, 2023. And please make sure to mark your calendar for Kindergarten Information Night on January 25, 2023, which will be in person at each building.
Things to know:
- Royal Oak Schools processes new student enrollments online at www.royaloakschools.org.
- Michigan State Law stipulates that a child be five (5) years of age on or before September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten and Developmental Kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year. If a child is not five (5) years of age by the September 1 enrollment eligibility date, but will be five (5) years of age no later than December 1, an option for parents or guardians to enroll the child in kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year is available.
- An Age Waiver form is available on our district website.

Here she will promote understanding and share dialogue and events centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion in and around our district.
Blessings in a Backpack
"Blessings in a Backpack” is a program designed to provide students on the free and reduced lunch program with enough food for three meals a day during the weekends. This program, administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, is active in Royal Oak Schools. If you agree to take part in this program during the school year, your child will receive a bag filled with food for the weekend. A bag of food will be put in your child's locker for take home on Fridays. The simple meals may include food like macaroni and cheese, beef ravioli, canned fruit, granola bars, soups, juice and other items. Students will receive a bag every week.
If you would like to have your child participate in this program, fill out the form below and mail it to the board office at 800 Devillen, Royal Oak, MI 48073, or just hit submit on this form. Please be sure to indicate on the form if you child has any food allergies. If your child has a food allergy, you as the parent are responsible for checking all food labels when the food arrives home. Royal Oak Schools, as well as Blessings in a Backpack, will not be held responsible for any accidental food allergen exposure.
