Cape Elementary: Seahawk Sentinel
April 1, 2019
Cape's Mission & Vision
Vision: We believe that the most promising strategy for achieving the mission of Cape Elementary is to develop our capacity to function as a professional learning community.
Dear Cape Families,
March was a wonderful month at Cape Elementary. We had a great turn-out for our second Fine Arts Night and Silent Auction. We also had 90% of Cape students attend the 3rd quarter SOAR Celebration. Students have to reach their behavior and reading goals to attend. Special thanks to PTO for purchasing Game Guys and all of our bounce houses for the SOAR Celebrations. Way to go, Cape kids!
Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are ready to show what they know on the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). They will have the opportunity to take the FSA in the month of April and May. Please look at our school calendar in this newsletter or our website for specifics dates. Limited homework will be given during FSA testing days.
Please make sure your children are:
- at school each day by 7:45 a.m.
- well rested.
- fed a nutritious breakfast.
Cape Elementary and Lee County School District uses School Messenger all year long to communicate important information directly to you. We will all use it to communicate with you in the event of a school-wide or district-wide emergency or urgent event. The School Messenger system uses your contact information; therefore, please make sure your contact information, such as your telephone number and email, is up-to-date with us. Please notify the school office if there are changes to your child’s custody that restricts one biological parent’s access to school records or to the child. Parents must supply a copy of the court order that outlines the restrictions. Cape Elementary is also on Twitter and Facebook! Please follow us at @CapeElem!
We look forward to seeing all of our Cape families at our PTO Spring Fling on Friday, April 12 and at our Culver’s Night on Wednesday, May 24. Both are wonderful events for our Cape kids.
Cape is a special place to work. We are honored to be the leaders of this great school! Please continue to contact us via email or phone call when you have a concern, question or comment!
Sincerely,
Ms. Osterholm and Mrs. Sund

Attendance Matters....Did You Know?
We want to thank our Cape Elementary parents for all their help with ensuring students are coming to school! We are in our last quarter, and we know our Cape Elementary family will continue ensuring students are in school daily.
When students are chronically absent (unexcused and excused absences) and they miss 10% or more (18 or more days) during the school year it can impede the student’s academic success, successful graduation and ability to successfully complete post-secondary education (college, trade school or other work environment education skills).
Thank you again for all your help. Please know the school social worker, school counselor, administration and school staff will always be available to help with any attendance concerns. We want to support all our students’ success during their elementary academic career. Further information regarding chronic absences can be accessed through the link below.

Bus Stop Safety
Parents: The School District has provided us with some important safety tips to discuss with your children as you see fit.
WHILE WAITING AT THE BUS STOP:
· When waiting for the bus stop make sure you are at least three giant steps, or six feet away from the street.
· Never stand or sit near the street when waiting at your stop. Bus stops are not places to run or play.
· Wear clothing that makes it easy for drivers to see you. Bright colors like yellow, orange and white are great!
· Pay attention to your surroundings. Put down phones and take out your earbuds so you can hear and see what’s happening around you.
· If a trusted adult (parent, grandparent, friend) has not visited your bus stop lately, ask them to come one morning or afternoon. Introduce them to your bus driver and show them how you stay safe while you wait for the bus!
· If you drop something and it goes near or under the bus, never go get it. Tell your driver so he or she can help you.
· Never walk behind your school bus. If you have to walk in front of your bus, make sure you walk five giant steps, or 10 feet, ahead so your driver can see you.
· Wait until the bus has stopped and the doors are open before approaching the bus.
· Never talk to strangers at the bus stop. Always alert your bus driver as soon as possible if a stranger tries to talk to you or pick you up.
WHILE ON THE BUS:
· Do not speak loudly or make loud noises that could distract your driver.
· Always buckle up!
· Remain in your seat for the entire ride and keep the aisle clear!

From Our School Nurse-Kid's Screen Time
According to the American Heart Association, children are spending way too much time in front of screens and is urging parents to drastically cut the hours their kids are allowed to use their phones, computers, tablets, and video games.
Kids and teens age 8 to 18 spend an average of more than seven hours a day looking at screens. The new warning from the AHA recommends parents limit screen time for kids to a maximum of just two hours per day. For younger children, age 2 to 5, the recommended limit is one hour per day.
Research has linked screen time with an increased amount of sedentary behavior in children and teens. There is evidence that it is associated with obesity. In addition, the blue light from screens can hinder their ability to fall asleep, and lack of sleep may also contribute to obesity risk.
Parents need to be the ones to step in to set limits. Parents also need to encourage children to play outside and have face-to-face interactions with their peers. Media-free zones, such as no screen time in the bedroom and media-free times, including no devices at the dinner table, can also be beneficial.
Most importantly, parents should be fully present when they're with their children. Kids’ notice exactly what parents are doing, so be a good example about putting your phone down or your tablet down and talking to your children and being engaged. Be a good role model!
