21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
It's fun to watch our spring student-athletes right now ... flashes of excellence stemming from hard WORK WORK WORK mixed in with some old-fashioned, blue-collar TOUGHNESS! These kids play HARD until the end and as the legendary rock & pop band The Monkees said so eloquently, "I'M A BELIEVER'! When you get a chance, come on out and see for yourself!
For now, let's take a break ... spring cleaning can wait ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Softball
Monday over at Marquette Catholic in Michigan City, Hobart scored 1 in the top of the 1st, but the Blazers tied it with a run in the bottom of the 4th. A Lady Brickie rally in the top half of the 6th inning netted 2 more runs and plenty of cushion for sophomore Saylem Smith to close out a GEM as Hobart won the low-scoring affair 3-1. Smith was SO DOMINANT on the mound that she finished with a SCHOOL-RECORD 18 STRIKEOUTS while only surrendering 2 hits and 2 walks!! Do the math folks ... there are only 21 outs in a 7-inning game, which means Saylem struck out ALL but 3 batters in the game - WOW! At the plate, Smith and sophomore teammate Hannah Camarena, along with junior Abby Grusak, contributed an RBI each to account for Hobart's 3 runs.
Tuesday the Lady Brickies welcomed area #10-ranked Highland for their Northwest Crossroads Conference opener. The Lady Trojans jumped on Hobart early and led 3-0 after only an inning and a half, but HERE COME THE BRICKS! These ladies responded with 4 BIG RUNS in the bottom of the 2nd to take a lead they would not relinquish as Hobart WON a HUGE game over a top 10 team 8-6! Led by sophomores Hannah Camarena (3 for 4 with an RBI) and Allie Arauz (2 for 4 with 3 RBI), Hobart BELTED out 13 hits in total - 5 for extra bases! A night after setting a new school record, sophomore Saylem Smith BATTLED the Lady Trojans all night on the mound and the Lady Brickie offense backed her up to secure the 'W'.
On Thursday, our girls took a short trip across County Line Rd to face off against Wheeler and when they returned, only "heeler" was left on the school sign because we came back with another "W"! This time, sophomore Hannah Camarena was LIGHTS OUT on the bump as she only surrendered 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 8! Obviously, her teammates backed her up with some tough D-D-D-DEFENSE in the 10-1 victory! In the batter's box, it was again sophomores Camarena (3 for 3 with 4 runs and 3 stolen bases) and Saylem Smith (3 for 4 with 4 runs, 3 steals and 2 RBIs), along with junior Abby Grusak (2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs), who led the charge as Hobart improved to 4-2 on the season with their 4th STRAIGHT WIN!
Heavy rains on Thursday night caused a Friday postponement and delayed Saturday's home game until 1pm, but Hobart was still able to host Hanover Central in the afternoon affair. Unfortunately, it appears the Friday postponement and delayed start on Saturday may have negatively impacted the SWEET MOJO our Lady Brickies had going as Hanover headed back to Cedar Lake with a 10-1 victory. Hanover jumped on Hobart early scoring 3 runs in the 1st ... each team plated a run in the 3rd to make it 4-1 ... but that's as close as the Lady Brickies would get. Hobart had chances with runners on base multiple times throughout the game, but couldn't quite get the key hit when it was needed. Junior Lauren Bernhardt and sophomores Hannah Camarena and Sarah Joswiak notched 2 hits each for Hobart in the girls 1st loss in over a week.
The Lady Brickies are currently 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in NCC play!

Baseball
On Monday, Hobart hosted the Red Devils on what was absolutely the MOST BEAUTIFUL day we've had this spring ... and even more BEAUTIFUL was the fact that "LLowell" left town with ANOTHER "L" :). With the Brickies leading 4-2 in the top of the 5th, the Devils rallied for 3 runs to take the lead 5-4, but HERE COME THE BRICKS! In the bottom half of that same inning, Hobart charged back to tie things up as sophomore Jaden Deel escaped a run-down, stole 3rd and scored on junior Tyler Schultz’s 1-out double to center field! Junior Austin Kunkle entered the game in the top of the 6th and SHUT DOWN Lowell by striking out the side! Junior Jack Huber scored on junior Matthew Benton’s RBI single in the bottom of the 6th and Deel followed with another RBI single as the Brickies went on to win 8-7! Kunkle even struck out the final Red Devil batter with the tying run on 2nd to end the game in dramatic fashion!
On Tuesday, the Brickies traveled south on I-65 for a rematch ... only this time, the final tally wasn't nearly as close with Hobart beating the Devils again by the score of 9-3. At the plate, it was a pair of sophomores doing DAMAGE as Jaden Deel (3 for 5 with 1 run and 2 RBIs) and Bobby Babcock (1 for 3 with a triple, 2 runs and 3 RBIs) drove in over half of Hobart's runs. On the mound, junior Tyler Schultz was MASTERFUL in his approach as he only gave up 4 hits while striking out 7 batters in 6 and one-third innings of work!
Thursday's match-up featured two top area teams as #4-ranked Griffith came to the friendly city to square off with the #6-ranked Brickies ... and folks, this one HAD IT ALL! The Panthers arrived late for the 5pm start, but their bats got going early to help them jump out to a 4-0 lead after 2 innings. HERE COME THE BRICKS! Hobart chipped away ... little by little ... at the Panther lead and trailed only 5-4 heading into the final inning. Griffith was able to score an insurance run to extend the lead to 6-4 with the Brickies down to their last at-bat of the contest. As the sun was setting on the diamond, it appeared Hobart's chances were going with it ... but HERE COME THE BRICKS! Hobart scored twice to make it 6-6 ... and with runners on, junior Brandon Marciniak hit paydirt with a WALK-OFF, 2-out single that brought in the winning run and gave Hobart a THRILLING 7-6 VICTORY!! Junior Tyler Schultz and freshman Ivan Balboa were each 2 for 3 swinging the bat with Schultz adding 2 RBIs as well. Balboa had the EYE OF THE TIGER on the mound as he FOUGHT OFF the Panther hitters and struck out 6 while scattering 3 hits in 6 innings of work!
Hobart's 5-game WINNING STREAK has them at 6-3 on the year and UNDEFEATED in conference play with a 2-0 record!

On Saturday, Hobart hosted the 79th annual Little 5 Track Meet ... and it's actually not so "Little" anymore. There were 16 teams competing (8 girls & 8 Boys) at the Brickyard and OUR BRICKS DID SHINE!! In the team competition, our girls placed 2nd overall - barely losing to Valparaiso 128-125.5, and our boys were 3rd - getting edged out by Boone Grove by 1 point 137-136. South Bend St. Joe was the boys team champion with 158 points.
Individually, the Brickies had some TREMENDOUS performances!
For the girls, Senior Olexia Brookshire took 2nd in both the 100 and 400, junior Lauren Romeo WON the 800 in a season best time of 2:32.91, freshman Sydney Belk placed 2nd in both the mile and 2-mile, junior Addison Metts finished 2nd in the 100m hurdles and long jump, sophomore Anisha Lewis was 2nd in the 200 and the 4x400m relay team capped the day off in style for the Lady Brickies with a 'W' over the Lady Vikings by 3 seconds!
On the boys side, senior Devante Clemons WON the 400 in 51.43 seconds and took 3rd in the 200, sophomore Bruce Leipart WON the 1600 in a season-best time of 4:43.90, junior Bryan Cherry placed 3rd in both the mile and 2-mile, sophomore Zach Vode WON the high jump with a lifetime best jump of 6'5", senior Wyatt Decanter finished 3rd in the long jump with a leap of 19'04", senior Max Salazar was 2nd in the discus throw, junior Jacob Gresham placed 4th in the shot put, and Hobart went 1-2 in the pole vault with junior Lance Skog finishing 2nd at 11'06" and sophomore Riley Johnston WINNING with a new lifetime best vault of 15'03"!!
With the NCC Championships about 3 and a half weeks away, Hobart is looking better and better with some solid depth AND some big scoring front-runners in multiple events! Both boys and girls should be in the hunt for a top 2 finish and the post-season will be EXCITING!

Junior Nathan Schammert led the Brickies with a team-best 48 over 9 holes at River Pointe. Senior Jacob #BrickVode was next with a 50 and junior teammates DJ Lipke and Devin O'Brien rounded out Hobart's top 4.
This was Hobart's first chance this spring to 'swing the wrenches' against someone else ... and after securing the 1-stroke victory, the Brickies are 1-0! Na-na-na-na-na-na-na

Girls Tennis
It was an BUSY week of play for girls tennis with home matches on Tuesday and Thursday against some tough competition ... and on Saturday, the girls hosted the 7th annual Hobart Invite!
On Tuesday, Hobart went toe-to-toe with the Crown Point, but the Lady Brickies couldn't quite get the Lady Bulldogs to roll-over and we lost a close one 2-3. Hobart's 2 wins were scored at #1 singles by sophomore Addison Kasch and at #3 singles by freshman Emma Novak in THRILLING 3rd set come backs! HERE COME THE BRICKS! Sophomore Lauren Cicillian at gave a terrific effort at # 2 singles and our doubles teams are showing improvement every match!
Thursday, Hobart welcomed the KV Kougars to the Friendly City for the Northwest Crossroads Conference opener. Against an athletic Lady Kougar squad and battling some ridiculous wind cutting across our courts, the Lady Brickies dropped a tough one by a 1-4 final. Freshman Emma Novak was the lone winner for Hobart at #3 singles and remained undefeated on the young season with individual victories over Valpo, Crown Point and KV!
Some highlights from Saturday's Invite:
The #2 doubles team consisting of senior Amanda Cicillian and sophomore Ruthie Sutliff recorded their first win of the season!
Freshman Emma Novak won her 1st two matches to earn herself a chance to play for the #3 singles title, but lost a hard fought 3rd set tie-breaker in the final.
#1 singles sophomore Addison Kasch played consistently all day going 1 for 3 with two 3rd set tie-breakers.
These young ladies are WORK WORK WORKING hard, showing improvement, and SERVING notice that Hobart will be a force to be reckoned with when sectional play begins in a month! Keep up the GREAT work ladies!

Brickie "BOWL"
On December 7, 2019, Hobart High School, in partnership with the City of Hobart and the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, will HOST an NCAA Division 2 College Football game - AMERICA'S CROSSROADS BOWL - in the HHS BRICKYARD Stadium!
This will be the FIRST EVER College Football Bowl game in Indiana and only the 5th in the nation for NCAA Div 2. The game will involve the top teams from both the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conference) and GMAC (Great Midwest Athletic Conference) that do not receive NCAA Division 2 playoff bids. The weekend event will involve practice for both teams at the Brickyard on Friday, along with community service that afternoon and a team dinner in our very own great hall! Saturday will have a team breakfast at County Line Orchard and a FANFEST in the HHS Fieldhouse ... with the game slated for a 1pm CST start!
The GLVC and GMAC commissioners did their research and could've brought this to a number of locations across the Midwest, but H-H-H-O-B-A-A-A-R-T was the location they chose because of the RICH football tradition at our school and the passion this city and entire region has for the pigskin. This is a wonderful opportunity to present an outstanding overall experience for their student athletes at a venue like our BRICKYARD! Special thanks to Rick Flutka from the South Shore CVA, Hobart Mayor Brian Snedecor, and SCOH Superintendent Dr. Peggy Buffington for helping this become a reality for our city on the lake!
If you're hungry for a BOWL of college football, BE HERE on December 7th for all the action!
