April, 2019 Words for the Wise
2019 IAR State Testing Begins Monday, April 8th
Set Sail for New Adventures!
Ahoy Owen Families,
Our fabulous third, fourth and fifth grade students will be showing what they know during their journey in learning this year starting tomorrow. The Illinois Assessments for Readiness (IAR) window opens. Each of the intermediate grade levels will take three math and three English/language arts assessments. Fifth graders will also take one Science assessment. For more information on the Illinois Assessments for Readiness (IAR) and to take practice tests visit http://www.isbe.net.
Here is our schedule:
5th Grade: Weeks of 4-8 and 4-15. Administered in the mornings from 9:30-11:30
3rd Grade: Weeks of 4-8 and 4-15. Administered in the afternoons from 12:00-2:15
4th Grade: Weeks of 4-15 and 4-22. Administered in the afternoons from 1:00-3:00
All 3rd-5th graders should bring headphones or earbuds for testing every day of the assessments.
We ask that you do everything possible to ensure your child is in attendance and on time this month. Of course, we want this every month, but we only have until April 26th to do any make-up testing if a student is absent or misses the beginning of a testing session.
While these tests are not tests for which a student can study, the following tips will help ensure your child performs to the best of his/her ability.
* Do some physical activity each evening to release some energy.
* Get a good night’s rest.
* Eat a nutritious breakfast each day.
* Be sure to get to school on time.
* Avoid scheduling doctor or dentist appointments during these weeks.
* Encourage your child to do their best and think positively about their achievement.
To show our support for our Owl-Standing Owls, the CC! Kids Cabinet has created spirit days to show our school wide support for our older Owls. We also have a few special surprises for the test-takers too! Thank you for helping us inspire our students to do their best!

Owl-Standing Character! 97% of our Owls have no office behavioral referrals so far this year!
CHARACTER COUNTS! Everywhere and all the time!
Starting with character education and moving to character action is not a year-long journey, it is a life-long journey. We want our passengers to learn about character education, but more importantly we want our passengers to apply these character traits in their daily lives.
Thank you for teaming with us in this journey by looking for your child applying these positive characteristics in their lives outside of school. We'd enjoy hearing from you.

Students Earning a Positive Referral
Congratulations to the following Owl-Standing Owen Owls for earning a Positive Referral since the last newsletter for demonstrating exceptional character. Any staff member may acknowledge a student who exemplifies great character on a regular basis. We encourage you to celebrate this with your child. We recognize each student during morning announcements. He or she will sign our Kids for Character Positive Referral Book and place a personal Owl-Standing Owl of Character on our Kids for Character Tree in the main hallway.
Each quarter students who earn two or more Positive Referrals and have no office behavioral referrals have a special celebration that is planned by our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Team (PBIS Team). At the end of the year students earning three or more Positive Referrals will enjoy a Limo ride, lunch, and fun at Commissioner's Park with Captain Earlenbaugh.
