The Shoally Creek "Tweet"
September 2018
A Message from the Principal:
Greetings, Shoally Creek Elementary Families!
What a wonderful first two weeks of school! We had our first Chick-fil-A Spirit Night, our annual Kindergarten Camp event, and welcomed our littlest Blue Jay learners, our 4K students!
As we begin the month of September, please be sure to mark your calendar for some exciting events. One event you will not want to miss is our PTO/Back to School Open House on Monday, September 10th! This will be an opportunity for our families to learn how our school recently became a Certified Energy Bus School, something we are excited to share! There will also be time for families to join PTO, order the 2018-2019 Yearbook, and visit classrooms!
Please continue to read this month's newsletter for more information and calendar items! As always, thank you for making Shoally Creek Elementary a great place to learn!

The Energy Bus - A State of Positivity!
We invite all of our Shoally Creek families to join us on an exciting new ride aboard The Energy Bus, based on the best selling book by Jon Gordon! During our pre-service week in August, the entire SCES faculty and staff participated in a full day of Positive Educator Training. We learned about the 7 Principles that fuel our rides with positive energy. Our teachers and staff have already started teaching the Principles and telling the story of Joy (a bus driver) and George (a passenger down on his luck) and the power that having a positive attitude can have on our lives!
Each month throughout the school year, we will be introducing a new Energy Bus Principle and celebrating our success with the Principle.

Become a Mentor!
According to Harvard University's Center on Developing Child, "Every child who ends up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult." This year, our school is partnering with Mentor Upstate, a nonprofit organization, that seeks to support children with one-on-one positive relationships. As we launch this exciting program, we are looking for committed adults who are willing to support and encourage ONE student for the year. If you or someone you know from our school community can give 30 minutes a week, we need you!!
All mentors will fill out an application and attend a short training session. Boiling Springs FBC will be hosting a session for anyone in the District Two area that is interested in being a mentor on SUNDAY, September 9 at 5:00 pm. You can register for that training at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mentor-spartanburg-training-boiling-springs-fbc-tickets-49390124191.
If you have any questions, you are invited to email the director of Mentor Spartanburg, at natalie@mentorupstate.org.
Reminders
*All afternoon transportation changes must be communicated to the front office by 11:00 am. Please reference the Student Handbook for further information.
*Please remember the South Carolina Compulsory Attendance Laws and Regulations in regards to the number of minutes students must attend school each day. Every minute that a student is not in class is counted and reported to the state. If a student misses even 15 minutes of class, this adds up to over an hour of class each week. Please make every minute count for learning!
*Beginning-of-Year Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments will be taking place in Reading and Math for all students 5K - 4th grade over the next 3 weeks. Please encourage your child to do their best as we use these results to meet your child's individual academic needs. Your child's teacher will share the specific dates for their classes' assessments.
*RSVPs will be sent home with students for our Goodies for Grandparents events at the end of the month. This is an event that we love hosting each year!
*Fall Pictures will be on Thursday, September 13th. Bring your prettiest smiles!!
