Meet Dr. Smith
June 21, 2019
Who is Dr. Smith?
My name is Dr. VaShawn D. Smith and I am excited to introduce myself as the new principal of Grandview Middle School. I am honored to have been selected to join the Grandview C-4 School District. I hope that this letter finds you enjoying the rejuvenating days of summer. I am looking forward to the beginning a wonderful school year together. Over the past 13 years, I have worked as a teacher, instructional coach, and administrator in Omaha, NE, Columbus, OH, and Kansas City, KS. Throughout my time in education I have worked tirelessly to be a child advocate and instructional leader. This past May I completed my doctoral work at Saint Louis University where my dissertation focused on trauma informed schools. I also celebrated my one and only child graduating high school from Sumner Academy of Arts & Science in Kansas City, KS, and now I am currently preparing for her to go off to Xavier University in New Orleans, LA, where she will major in Biology (Pre-Med).
To My New GMS Family!
Not only am I excited to begin working with the students and staff at Grandview Middle School, but I look forward to the work we all will do together as a community. As the old African Proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” My conversations with district leadership, Grandview Middle School staff, and the families I had the pleasure of meeting over the last few months have brought me privileged insights into the core beliefs and values of Grandview C-4 School District. With my goal of continuing the tradition of excellence here at Grandview Middle School, I am committed to always exploring new ways to meet the needs of all students and to more effectively communicate with parents and community members. We will be meeting with parents, students, and as a staff throughout the year to identify specific goals in the areas of student achievement, school climate, and parent communication.
To all my new students, I cannot wait to meet you all! I hope that you are excited for this coming school year and that you are out this summer playing and reading tons of books with your family and friends. It is going to be a fun year learning together. If you are nearby the school at all this summer, please stop by and say hello
