The Sneak Peek
Aug. 27th, 2018
Welcome
I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of your children. I have spent countless hours trying to make everything 'just right'. I want them to feel at home in our classroom. I will be continuing to add special items to our classroom as our year proceeds.
Homework
I have reviewed your child's reading data, including their level, and we will begin checking out books for homework next week. (We do not have reading logs .... there are lots of interesting reads about how that kills the joy of reading.) I will provide paper books and comprehension guides for each child on their individualized reading level. These resources are extremely important to your child's growth as a reader.
In addition I will provide an optional math sheet.
I will send homework on Mondays and request the paper booklet be returned the next Monday. I understand families are very busy and want to provide you with plenty of time.
I will also be providing an optional STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) project for children at the beginning of each month. These projects are an amazing way to encourage the development of your child's Twenty-First Century skills. For children who choose to participate, projects will be due at the end of each month. We will set up a STEAM gallery where classmates will engage with each other, learning about these amazing projects!
Please don't overdo it! I do believe that homework is a wonderful tool for parent-teacher communication. It lets you see the expectation and what is going on in the classroom. However, it is not worth loosing sleep or battling your child over. It is more important that your child to have some down time, play outside, and spend time with their family.

Class Curriculum
This week is truly all about getting to know one another and learning the routines and expectations of our classroom.
Children will learn what Reader's Workshop looks like, sounds like, and feels like in our classroom. Each child will pick a special spot for reading around the room. They will learn how to shop for and select books that are just right for them.
Writer's Workshop -
Writing is one of my favorite times of the day.... and my children always love it as well! We will begin by establishing our routines about how Writer's Workshop looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Our first writing unit is; Launching and Personal Narratives. Children will love sharing stories about themselves, special events, and memories!
Math Workshop -
We will begin this week by establishing procedures. We will be working on collaborative groups on multiple math task and challenges. Children will be developing those Can Do' attitudes!
