Happy 2014!
Welcome back to school! I hope you had a lovely time with your family and enjoyed a much needed vacation from our hard work. We are ready to meet this new year with great expectations. Due to the condition of our playground it's important that students are dressed for wet, icy snow and cold since we could experience any of these conditions on any given day. Bringing an extra pair of pants/socks may be a good idea until we get some addtional snow.
Math: We'll begin our Mountain Math this week. This is a review of all sorts of concepts 4th graders need to know, and it's a great review for subjects we've already studied. We're also delving into division. Homework: Mon. 339, Tues. 345-346, Wed. Prob. Solving, Thurs. pg. 349-350.
Reading: We are reading a book about everyday inventions this week with the idea that students will look at the impact that small everyday items make on our life.
Language: We'll be sharing our books with Ms. Maslow's class this week. We'll also work on writing poetry this week. Spelling words are on Spelling City and students are expected to practice their words in some manner at least three days over the week. The words are: family, often, office, traffic, elephant, faint, favorite, fantastic, offer, suffer, waffles, buffalo, dolphin, telephone, photograph, nephew, physical, fabulous, symphony and phrase.
Social Studies: This week we'll begin our study of Alaska . We'll discuss what we already know and move into the Aleutian region first.
Science: We are continuing to learn about simple machines this week and next. I'll send a study guide home next week and we'll have a test the following week.
Other items: Friday is the school-wide geography bee at 1:30. We may have a few participants, but I won't know who until Monday.
Please continue to collect box tops for us as there is another drive taking place in Feb.
Students should be reading for their weekly reading logs. I'll assign the next book report next Monday so they'll want to find a chapter book their interested in reading this week.
Our library day has switched so I'll update you as soon as I know the exact time/day.
