District 103
School Safety
Dear D103 Families,
Recent incidents of gun violence in schools and communities nationwide have raised concerns about safety in our schools. We want to assure you that we have taken many measures to create a secure learning environment for our students and staff. These measures include:
Keeping outside doors locked during school hours.
Providing secure entrances where visitors are only allowed through the front doors.
Installing camera systems inside and outside all schools.
Installing emergency panic buttons.
Equipping classroom doors with locks.
Providing training for staff on how to respond to active shooter situations.
Coordinating with police and fire departments for emergency preparedness and threat response.
Partnering with a police liaison officer to build relationships with students and advise on security measures.
Conducting age-appropriate emergency drills for students.
Teaching students to report concerns to adults.
Conducting health assessments at the junior high to identify students at risk for mental health issues.
Installing screening software to detect potential threats in emails.
Implementing a strong Social Emotional Learning program to foster caring relationships between students and staff members.
We understand that news of school shootings can be frightening for students of all ages, and discussing these events with your children can be challenging. We recommend the following tips when talking to your children about tragic events:
Limit their exposure to news media broadcasts.
Remain calm and composed, as your children take their cues from you.
Listen to your children and be sensitive to their emotions. Reassure them that you and their school staff are doing everything possible to ensure their safety.
Answer their questions with simple, reassuring answers.
Monitor your child's behavior for any signs of stress.
Inform your child's teacher or school social worker if you have any concerns about your child's behavior so they can provide support.
We want to emphasize that the safety of your children, our staff, and our community is our top priority. Thank you for partnering with us to create a safe and caring community for our schools.
Sincerely,
Scott Warren, Ed. D
Superintendent of D103 Schools
