Growth Mindsets vs. Fixed Mindsets: Which do your students have?
Psychologist and researcher Carol Dweck maintains that how students perceive their abilities plays an integral role in their motivation and achievement. In her studies, students who believed their intelligence could be developed (grown) outperformed those who believed their intelligence was fixed. (Dweck, 2016).
It is important that we help our students change their fixed mindsets. Not an easy task, to be sure, but with gentle persistence and the right approach, we just might change their perception of themselves and build their self-efficacy. When you hear a student say, "I can't do this!" reply, "You can't do it, yet. You will."
