News from the Music Class
So much to be thankful for in the music room this November! We enjoy working with your children so much and seeing them grow as musicians! This month each grade level will be singing some patriotic music as we prepare to sing around the flag pole on Veteran's Day, and after that we will be moving onto fun songs for Thanksgiving. Just before Thanksgiving break starts, we will begin our music for Holiday Sing! That time sure goes quickly! One other thing to note is that chorus will be starting on Monday, October 30th. New this year chorus will be in the mornings from 8:00-8:40 instead of during lunch recess. If your 4th or 5th grader wants to be in chorus, have them come to the music room to bring home a form. The more the merrier!
First graders are also singing solos this month! In addition, they will also be learning about AB form, or verse-refrain form. This is the form you hear most often on the radio.
Students in second grade sing a funny song and dance where they learn to "woogie," which is how turkeys boogie! Each child will be singing solos to this song!
Third graders learn about a dance style called the Tango in the Turkey Tango. This song does more than teach just that style, however. The students will learn all about history, geography, and new vocabulary words!
The fourth graders will touch upon some syncopation and offbeats this month. This is a very tricky concept already, but we are giving the added challenge of making them harmonize in two parts without ostinato, rounds, or partner songs they have grown accustomed to using.
Fifth graders will be going into the history of our patriotic music, specifically The Star Spangled Banner. We are going to explore where the song came from, how it was written, and why it was written. We will be talking about some of the vocabulary in the music, and will also watch famous renditions of the song to compare and contrast how they are sung with each other and the original version.

FROM THE SCHOOL HEALTH OFFICE
Students at Franklin have completed vision and hearing screening.
Parents/guardians of students who failed the vision screening criteria will be rescreened in approximately two weeks. Students may initially fail vision screening due to a temporary eye condition. You will receive notification of the need for professional evaluation if, at rescreen, the vision test is failed again. Parents/guardians of students who are presently under the care of a physician for glasses or other reasons will receive a request for a report from the eye professional for the child's school health record.
Students who fail the hearing screening are rescreened in approximately two weeks. Students may fail hearing screening because of respiratory or ear infections. Once these resolve, the child is usually successful in meeting the hearing screening criteria. If the problem persists, referral for a medical evaluation will be sent home.
