Desert View High School FAFSA Best Practices
FSA ID: To prepare for FAFSA session, seniors created their FSA ID in September as part of their Homeroom assignment. During this class, students were also presented with information regarding the FAFSA such as what it is, why it's important, and what items are needed to complete the application. In addition, the "FAFSA for a Fortune" theme was introduced to the seniors to generate excitement surrounding the FAFSA.
Collaboration: The Desert View team created a list of items that students may need for college whether they are living in a dorm, apartment, or at home. They created a sign-up sheet that was shared with counselors and faculty to donate items that ranged from basic college necessities to themed gift baskets. Examples and themed baskets included: kitchenware baskets (cups, plates, silverware) laundry baskets (dryer sheets, detergents, towels) snack baskets (chips, candy, top ramen, mac & cheese) and relaxation baskets (adult coloring books, colored pencils, pens).
Going Above and Beyond: Some faculty members went above and beyond by donating coffee pots, desk lamps, and gift cards. The counselors devoted a weekend to creating the baskets with items donated by faculty.
Your Chance to Win: Desert View High School hosts FAFSA events each month throughout the school year. As students completed their FAFSA, they were given a Fortune Cookie and a raffle ticket for a chance to win a dorm basket and various other prizes. This created excitement among the seniors and increased participation in their monthly FAFSA completion workshops.
67 seniors who completed the FAFSA won various gift baskets, gift cards, prom tickets, museum passes, and yearbooks! This three month initiative resulted in over half of their seniors with a completed FAFSA on file!
