School Update
Dear Students & Families,
Oh wow! Trunk or Treat was phenomenal! It was well attended and the children were dressed in the cutest of costumes. The car trunks were fully decorated, parents were fully involved, and children were having fun!
We celebrated STEAM week. We were grateful to DPW for presenting to our 3rd graders about the importance of water. The students are now participating in the DPW poster competition. The kindergartens did a wonderful STEAM pumpkin activity. On Friday, we focused on Art Matters Day. The music and art department collaborated in sand and music activities.
Our peer leaders did a phenomenal job of taping, decorating, and delivering the Food Drive boxes to each homeroom. Food Drive information was sent home in the students' folder on Friday. We will kick-off this event on Monday.
Of note, this time period marks the festival called Diwali. It's a 5-day celebration that started on Friday. It is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists (Vajrayana branch, prominent in Tibet, Nepal, and Japan). Diwali means illumination. People light lamps or candles on the first day (today) and keep them burning 24 X 7 for five days and nights. It celebrates diversity, promotes equity, and journey to "oneness". People wish each other by saying "Happy Diwali" or "Diwali Mubaarak". It is celebrated across the USA in all major cities.
I look forward to great and safe week!
Sincerely,
Dr. Marguerite Lackard
Principal

Make Attendance a Priority
As a partner in your child’s education, you can help by working with us to make school attendance a priority.
Here are several tips to help your child attend school every day:
Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session;
Talk to teachers, social workers, or counselors for advice if your child(ren) feel anxious about going to school;
Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school; and
Above all, let us know how we can help with any barriers you may be facing to get your child to school every day.
OTHER
SECOND STEP
Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. Second Step’s holistic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth and safety of today’s children. (See attached video).
For Families
Starting soon, our schoolwide theme is our school as a welcoming place where every student feels like he or she belongs. In our morning announcements and school assembly, we’ll be reminding students to welcome others and act and speak in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. In addition, we’ll be reminding students of our school rules. (Fill in the school rules here.)
We’ll also begin teaching the Second Step program, which includes lessons that support these behaviors.
Support your child at home in welcoming others and acting and speaking in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. Please tell your child’s teacher if you have questions about specific ways you can help your child with these behaviors at home.
Kindergarten, Unit 1 Lesson 1: Learning to Listen
Grade 1, Unit 1 Lesson 1: Listening to Learn
Grade 2, Unit 1 Lesson 1: Being Respectful
Grade 3, Unit 1 Lesson 1: Being Respectful Learners
Grade 4, Unit 1 Lesson 1: Empathy and Respect
Grade 5, Unit 1 Lesson 1: Empathy and Respect
Sometimes students feel their emotions in a “big” way. They may not be able to identify what they are feeling or remember the tools that are available. In situations like this, the teacher may decide that the best way to help the student with their feelings is to move the class to another location. This gives the student privacy to work with a support staff member and use some of the social and emotional tools needed to express and re-set their “big” feelings.
If a situation like this does occur, the teacher in the classrooms always reminds students that everyone has feelings and everyone needs help with them from time to time. Typically, a class meeting occurs to think about ways to support one another as a classroom community.
It is our belief that everyone at times needs help when they have strong feelings.
