Description of Stonehenge
The stones that were erected to form Stonehenge were put into a circular shape. The circular construction is called sarsens and there are 30 huge sarsen stones joined by lintels at the top. The sarsens stones weighed about 25 tons each. There is an inner circle of Bluestones that had to have been brought from over 200 kilometers away. It is in a horseshoe shape. There is an alter inside of the horseshoe shape. The Heel Stone is outside of the circle and is considered to be the entrance. It was the first stone placed when Stonehenge was built.
Short History
Stonehenge is about 5,00 years old. People think it took over 14,000 years to build. Many scientists think it was built in three phases (as shown in the picture above). No one really knows how Stonehenge was built or even who built it. There are a lot of theories about how the stones were moved. Some think that Merlin the Magician moved the stones into place. Some think that the stones were placed by the devil. A more scientific thought states that the stones were moved using simple machines (logs under the stones) and many people pulling the stones along the logs. Levers may have been used to put the stones upright. The ditches around the outside must have been dug using deer antler and animal bones as tools. Shoulder blades of cows or oxen could have been used to dig.
Sacred to Whom?
The Druids still celebrate their rituals at Stonehenge. The Druids believe that their ancestors built Stonehenge. Scientists have pretty much proven this thought to be wrong as the Druids did not celebrate in man made structures.
