Growing Kind Hearts & Minds While Inspiring Personal Success
From the Principal
Happy October To All Our Families,
The assessments are finally complete and students are making goals to meet this semester in many areas. The NWEA (MAP) results are looking as though our first and second graders kept their knowledge over the summer and are maintaining the skills learned to date, but are close to the expected growth percentages.
- What does this all mean? On average, our students are moving in the direction of mastery in the areas of Math and Language Arts in all grades.
- How can your family help? Keep reading every night for 15-20 minutes. Find books that are flooded with vocabulary and fun to read.
- In math, keep working towards fluency in math facts both addition and subtraction, or counting beyond 100.
- Read and engage with your child’s teacher’s newsletter as many times they include things they are working on in the classroom and you can support at home.
We always are so thankful for the tremendous support from our community and this school year is no different. Teachers were able to fill their classrooms with necessary items and students will have experiences because of your generosity. Thank you!
The first “Talks with Tiffany” was all about where to find information and about our student handbook. The handbook will be sent home with students at the beginning of next week. You will be asked to sign a form when it is read and return that form back to school. There are a couple of areas to review with your student and that is our behavioral expectations. We are still teaching and re-teaching those expectations in all areas of our school, so you can help us by reviewing them at home. Ask your student to tell how they are safe on the Playground? Or, how can they show their friends they are responsible in the classroom? Or, what does it look like to be respectful in the lunchroom?
We thank you for your partnership in this journey in creating successful learners.
Have a super weekend.
Educationally yours,
Tiffany Jackson, Principal

Reading Notes
Reading is a critical life skill. It impacts just about every area of life. For our young, emergent readers, we want to do everything we can to support and develop their reading skills. What can you do at home to help? According to the report, “Becoming a Nation of Readers,” THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITY for building knowledge for their eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” How can you best do that? Read out loud to your child. Listen to your child read. Echo read (you read a line, then they repeat) Read together at the same time. Reread or retell favorite stories. Talk to your child about reading. Talk about your favorite parts of the book you are reading together. Talk about some of the interesting words in the story. Talk about how the story you are reading connects to your life or to other stories you’ve read together ("This reminds me of..."). Don’t have many books at home? Go to the library! If you’re not sure what level books to check out, ask your child’s teacher for recommendations.
Building Healthy Communities Update: Family Meals
Family meals are important because they help create lifelong memories and allow you to stay connected to your child(ren). Family meals are a great time to teach your child about healthy eating habits and show them what a healthy meal looks like. It is important to never force or pressure children to eat a particular food. It can result in a lifelong hatred for that food, and turns the kitchen table into a battleground. It usually takes several exposures to a new food before a child is willing to try it. Invite, encourage and be a good role model. Here are some ways to make family meals a part of your family routine:
- Set a regular family meal time (try not to schedule any extra activities during that time).
- Eat at the table.
- Show that family meals are important--turn off the TV and other electronics during mealtime.
