Early life
Cortés was born in the Spanish city of Medellín in 1485. When he was a young man, he studied law, but he soon gave that up to seek his fortune in the New World that was just being discovered by Columbus and others.

The route Cortes took includes the states of Veracruz, Tlaxcala, Puebla and Mexico, ending in fascinating Mexico City. He was given funding by Peru, Spain, and rumored to have also received funding from Cuba to explore the Caribbean islands.

- In 1536, he discovered the peninsula of California
- He was also the Captain of Mexico.
Cortes against the Mayas
Before cortes died, he fought against the Pirates of Algiers in Africa during 1541, and later that year back in the New World, he led a force against the Mayas. Cortez died on December 2, 1547 near Seville.
