Thank You & Welcome Back!

Mrs. Vollmer filled in for Mrs. Heyward during her maternity leave from the start of the school year until Wednesday, November 11th. Because Mrs. Vollmer did such a wonderful job and has many students who know her, she has mentioned that she hopes to substitute for SAA in the near future. Mrs. Heyward returned Thursday, November 12th, and SAA is so glad to see her again! Welcome back, Mrs. Heyward! We hope you have a great first week back!

A Balancing Act

7th grade science students get a feel for balancing chemical equations with colored marshmallows. The balancing activity was colorful, fun, and delicious!

Science & Social Studies Switcheroo

The 7th and 8th grade science and social studies teachers, Mr. Kay and Mr. Burdette, have started switching classes once again. They are still teaching 7th and 8th grade along with going back to their original schedule of 45 minutes classes. Mr. Kay and Mr. Burdette are now have planning during half of 1st block and half of 3rd block. When asked about going back to switching classes again with Mr. Burdette, Mr. Kay thinks it is awesome!

HS Arts Class Information for 8th Graders

Auditions for eight grade students to enroll in the SAA high school classes will take place on November 30th for the students currently attending Southwood. The options are visual art, dance, choir, theatre, strings, and band. There are extra options that don't require previous experience or instruments like music production, guitar, and piano. Come prepared for the auditions and make sure you discuss your arts areas later on with Ms. Dolittle during your IGP meeting.

Kona Ice Supports A5 Schools

Anderson 5 has partnered with Kona Ice to offer its shaved ice treats to benefit the schools. Every Tuesday and Thursday the trucks will be stationed around town in order to maintain proper social distancing. 15% of the total sales will go back to the school district.

PE Schedule

Students have PE with Mr. Scarborough one day a week during related arts. Related arts for 8th grade is 1st block, for 7th grade is 3rd block, and for 6th grade is 4th block. For example, Mrs. Kay's dance students have PE on Fridays.

8th Grade Field Trip to AIT

8th Grade students will take two separate field trips to the Anderson Institute of Technology in November. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the courses available at AIT associated with the 18 areas of study listed in the chart below. In the photo on the left, dance, visual art, and strings 8th graders waited to board the buses for Wednesday's field trip. The next one is Monday!

Thanksgiving is in the Air

If you haven't had a chance, stop by and see the Thankful board in the 7th grade hallway! There are so many things to be thankful for! Many students and teachers are excited about Thanksgiving and all that goes with the holiday. The Newsletter Club created a Thanksgiving survey and would love to get your feedback for the next newsletter. Take some time to fill it in!

Newsletter Club Meetings

Newsletter Club members will get assignments Tuesday mornings 8:00-8:8:15 in the media center. Members also meet Thursdays or Fridays during 8th grade lunch in the media center. If you are late or unable to meet, please check with Mrs. Spencer.

Early Dismissal / Appointment Policies

Procedure change for any dismissal during the school day due to COVID19 precautions:
    • When you arrive at school, please call the office: 864-260-5205 to let us know you are here to pick up a student for dismissal.
    • Make sure to have your license ready and press the buzzer for entrance.
    • Once the door is unlocked, be prepared to show your license through the window while you will remain in the foyer. Please DO NOT enter the office area.
    • We will have a sign-out sheet in the foyer. Please know that we will get your student to you as quickly as we can.

Traffic Concerns

Parents, please watch for staff instructions and traffic cones or lanes when it comes to dropping off and picking up your students. Pedestrians have the right of way. Please watch traffic patterns and avoid using your phone while in the car line. Thank you for keeping student and faculty safety in mind.

Bus Information

Students will not be allowed to ride the bus with friends or neighbors unless that is going to be their permanent stop. If your student needs to ride the bus and have a stop created, please fill out this form.

Cafeteria News

As of now, all students will be able to receive breakfast and lunch at no cost through the rest of the school year! If you have already made a payment, it will be transferred to the following year.

Cafeteria Reminders
1. Please wash your hands or use hand sanitizer BEFORE eating.

2. Please wear masks in the lunch line and stand 6 feet apart.

3. Please do not grab utensils, condiments, etc. The cafeteria staff can help!

News from Nurse Rosa

COVID-19: Attendance is important and we want children to be in school every day that they are healthy. However, this year the greater good for school attendance is to keep children showing any symptoms of COVID-19 home until they are well. To keep all staff and classmates healthy, it is imperative that parents monitor the symptoms and temperatures of their children before sending them to school and implement the following steps:

1. Take the temperature of any child demonstrating shortness of breath, loss of taste, sore throat, muscle aches, chills, new or worsening cough, or runny nose.

2. Keep the child at home one or more days to monitor symptoms.

3. If you decide to have a COVID-19 test, notify the school nurse of the results so that the school can implement the Enhanced Health and Safety Protocols in the classroom(s) where your child attended.

*All information will remain confidential between the school and family. No other families will be given the health information of your child.

TDAP: All students are reminded that they must have their Tdap vaccination BEFORE starting 7th grade! Now is the time to schedule an appointment for your 6th grade student. Please submit documentation to Nurse Rosa after immunization.

This is a pick from Miss Paradis as well! Realistic fiction fans, Front Desk is for you! Mia and her parents are immigrants to the US from China. She and her parents barely make ends meet running a small hotel owned by Mr. Yao, a wealthy, unfair, and prejudiced boss. It will take all of Mia's courage, kindness, and hard work to get through this year. Will she be able to hold on to her job, help the immigrants and guests, escape Mr. Yao, and go for her dreams?
