CARES
Each month, staff members will have the opportunity to fill out a designated note when observing a student demonstrating one of the five CARES behaviors: Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy or Selfcontrol. Congratulations to all of the students that received this award for the months of October & November! The first CARES celebration will be held on December 12 at 8:15am and will include CARES nominees from both October & November.

TOYS FOR TOTS
The holidays are fast approaching and the staff at Glendale would like to get our 17th "Toys for Tots" campaign under way. Many of you are generous, giving gifts to the staff at Glendale. Instead of bringing a gift for your child's teacher, we are asking that you donate an unwrapped game or toy to "Toys for Tots." This could be an activity for you and your child that will bring hope and happiness to a child in need this holiday season. Children like to pick out gifts that they would enjoy receiving.
These donations are given to children of all ages. We will be collecting these donations in each of the classrooms. The collection begins Monday, November 27th and runs through Friday, December 8th.
Last year, our students donated over 350 items for "Toys for Tots." Let's aim even higher this year! We know that the children like to remember their teacher at this time of year. We all agree that a special note or card is a wonderful keepsake. We hope that you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season. Let's make this another HUGE success!
Youth Appreciation
Congratulations to Paige Hover for being honored by the Prior Lake Optimist Club on November 15th with a Youth Appreciation Award. Paige was nominated and honored by her teacher, Mrs. Jaeb, for regularly showing the CARES skills and for service to others outside of school. Students from all Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools were honored at the event. Congratulations Paige!
WE Day Book Drive
The 5th grade WE Day participants are collecting new and gently used books for the Scott County Battered Women’s Shelter. They are in dire need of reading material for children who are in a family crisis. If every child can bring in one book, Glendale would be able to donate about 600 books. Please consider donating a new or gently used book for a child in need. Picture or chapter books will be collected through Wednesday, November 29th.
Teacher of the Year
Thank You from School Tool Box
With the supply boxes purchased by Glendale this year, we are able to feed 340 children for a whole year!! WOW! Check out the certificate of appreciation they sent us.
Box Tops for Education
Are you going to see family over the holidays? Ask them to save Box Tops for you!
Submitting them to the school is a win!
Box Tops for Education Labels are worth $.10 each. Schools can use Box Tops cash to buy whatever they need. There are hundreds of eligible food, food storage, paper and undergarment products that have Box Top labels on them.
Students and parents win too!
Students who submit 25 Box Tops on the submission form (found on Glendale.com/PTC/Helping Glendale/Fundraising) can choose a coupon/reward to a local restaurant or activity. There is no limit for the number of rewards to receive. The submission form lists the current reward options.
Cold Weather Apparel
Dressing your child with warm clothes, hats, gloves, snow pants and boots helps students have a fun time in cold, snowy weather. Students will always go outdoors for recess unless the "feels like" temperature falls below -5 degrees or it is steadily raining. Please help to make sure your child is prepared for outdoor recess each day!
SPAN
SPAN is the Synergy/SAGE Parent Action Network. We are also known as the Prior Lake-Savage Chapter of the MN Council for the Gifted and Talented (MCGT). Our mission is to support and advocate for academically advanced students, their parents, and their educators. We will not meet in December. Our next meeting will take place on Thursday Jan. 11, 2018 at 7pm in the WestWood Elementary Media Center (5370 WestWood Dr. SE; Prior Lake, MN 55372), featuring a panel of parents of high-ability kids who will discuss their kids’ experiences moving through the school system. They will give recommendations and take questions. Please email Apryl at span.priorlake@gmail.com with question/concerns.
Also, we are planning to have a couple of coffee meetings toward the end of January where anyone can stop by to talk with SPAN Board members who have “been there” about any questions/concerns you have related to your child. Middle school and high school scheduling will be coming up around that time frame, and you are welcome to come to talk with SPAN Board members about scheduling questions.
Greetings from the Health Office!
Screening At Glendale:
We will be having Vision and Hearing Screening on December 7th.
1st grade- Vision and Hearing
3rd grade- Hearing only
4th grade- Vision only
If you would like to opt out of screening, please call or email the health office.
**Please remind your child to bring their glasses on screening day!
Parents, we would love to have you volunteer to help with screening.
Please sign up on sign-up genius for this (www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C084AAAAF28AA8-fall8), but feel free to call or email the health offices if you'd like to help out with this too. We have various shifts available.
We no longer do Scoliosis screening, so you might ask your pediatrician to do this during your child's wellness check-up.
Reminders:
The cold and flu season is upon us. Please consider getting your flu shot to protect yourself and those around you. Frequent hand washing is also a strong defense in preventing illness. If your child does become ill, please remember the following before sending them to school:
· If the student has had a fever of 100 degrees or more, the student should stay home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without medication.
· If the student has vomited or had diarrhea, he/she should stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.
· If the student has any rash that may be disease-related or the cause is unknown, check with your health care provider before sending him/ her to school.
· If the student has open/draining skin sores, or inflamed/draining eyes or ears the student should stay home until seen by your health care provider.
· Head Lice Information: As always, please remember to check your student for head lice over the winter break and periodically throughout the year. Information about head lice is available on the Health Services website: https://www.priorlake-savage.k12.mn.us/about-us/departments/health-safety If you do not have access to a computer, please call the Health office for a hard copy.
**Please remember to launder and return any clothes that your child borrows from the Health Office. We would appreciate any clothing donations, we are always in high need of pants and underwear in sizes 5/6 & 7/8, so please consider us as you are doing your closet clean outs!
