Nantucket Elementary School Latest News and Calendar Updates

Hello Families,

We hope you all had a wonderful winter vacation last week!! I was one of the people who did not leave the island last week. It was actually lovely to be here as the weather was not horrible. We had some nice days. It has been fun to see the suntans, the freckles, and hear the joyous stories from our students and staff regarding their time away. We had children who shared that they were in different parts of Florida, including Disney World, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and Mexico, among other places. We think the most important thing for our students, staff, and families to do on these breaks is to enjoy some down time. The opportunity to rest, rejuvenate, and refresh ourselves through spending time with family and friends is critical for our social and emotional wellbeing!!

As you may have heard, the mask mandate policy has been amended by the Nantucket Public School Committee. While the Governor of Massachusetts lifted the mask mandate for schools as of 2/28, he empowered school districts to make their own decisions. On Wednesday, 2/23/22, the School Committee met to decide on the date for our schools to lift the mandate. To that end, mask wearing by all students and staff will no longer be required as of Monday, March 14, 2022. It should be noted that all children and staff are welcome to continue wearing masks if they so choose. There will be a zero tolerance policy for any bullying towards those who choose to continue to wear masks and for those who choose to not wear masks. Should your child share that anyone made comments about masks to them that made them feel uncomfortable, please reach out to your child's teacher, our counselors, Mrs. Albertson, Assistant Principal, or Mrs. Kubisch, Principal.

We have some updates to the refrigerator calendar for the month of March. A much celebrated annual event, Literacy Night, has been moved from March 10th to April 12th. This is always a wonderful event where we celebrate the love of reading. We do this through sharing games, activities, and we have book characters walking about our school from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm on Tuesday, April 12th. We invite you to bring your family to join us as we roll out the red carpet for Literacy Night.

We are also trying to bring back our Annual Lip Sync event. Prior to Covid starting, we had the wonderful Lip Sync show occur yearly in the beginning of May. Our hope is to do this again this year. For those of you who are unsure about what this entails, Lip Sync involves groups of students coming together outside of school to practice lip syncing a song (mouthing the words and not singing). The groups often incorporate costumes, dance routines, and sometimes props. We will be having an information night for those who want to learn more about this family fun event on Wednesday, March 16th at 6:00 pm in the NES Cafe. At this information night, we will share details about the event, show a clip from lip syncs in the past, and have sign up to participate paperwork. Come check it out and bring your questions!!

As I am sure you have heard or encountered this, we want to reiterate that the parking lot off of First Way is for staff and high school students only. All of the parking spots are assigned to staff or students. There are now signs posted at the entrances to this lot stating that it is permit parking only. Parents and Guardians should not use that lot for any reason. This is a terrible place for students to be dropped off, this is not a drive through, and there is nowhere for any non permitted driver to park. Again, please stop driving in this lot. We are asking you to be a model for all children in the morning and the afternoon. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

Please be advised if you drive your children to school, you may only drive into the Backus Road lot for parking or to access the drive through loops for student drop off. Surfside Road lot and the First Way lot are staff only parking.

Remember to frequently check out the NES website for all current information, Parent Handbooks, School Improvement Plan, upcoming important dates, fun photos, and school council information. www.npsk.org click on schools and select NES

As always, please feel comfortable reaching out to Kim Albertson albertsonk@npsk.org or myself kubischk@npsk.org should you have any questions. We are always happy to assist!!

Warmly,

Kim Kubisch and Kim Albertson
