Leaping Into a New Year

Literature and Close Reading

New Semester, Clean Slate

As I greet the new and familiar students walking into the classroom, I want all of them to realize they cross the door threshold with an A+. No matter the outcome of last semester, we are in a new year, a new semester, and a new angle to English education. Last semester focused heavily on vocabulary and grammar skills, but this semester will detail on critical thinking, writing, group work, reading, and discussion.

That is not to say either semester lacked these fundamentals; they are only more robust and obvious. We are starting out with short stories, of which I feel ecstatic. All year it seems, students asked: "Ms. Bakke, when are we going to read together? When are we going to talk about exposition?" Now! Now we are!

Tips for helping your student: I created this website to allow students and parents the resources they need to work on homework. Your support is above and beyond the greatest gift you can provide, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The Quarter III Lesson Plan is located under Handouts. You can find my complete Lesson Plan under My PlanBook Link. As always, feel free to email me at janelle.bakke@k12.sd.us or call the school at your convenience. Thank you, and Happy 2016!
