FROM THE DESK OF WASHINGTON’S SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER L. GARY-JONES, MSW, LSW, ACSW
Greetings Washington Cardinal Families!!!!
The end of the 2021-2022 SY is quickly approaching, and we have spent the year working to teach our scholars the importance of Social Emotional Learning (S.E.L.) and Character Education. Our S.E.L. & Character Trait focus for April will be a review and reinforcement of the S.E.L. Competencies and Character Traits covered over the school year. The S.E.L. Competencies & Character Traits, with their corresponding definitions, covered in the 2021-2022 SY are as follows:
- Sensory-Motor Integration: The ability to have body awareness & recognize sensations in the body.
- Thoroughness: Knowing what factors will diminish the effectiveness of my work or words, if neglected.
- Collaboration: The ability to work well with others, including in a group & teamwork environment.
- Responsibility: Knowing and doing what is expected of me.
- Connection: The ability to understand & respond to the needs of others.
- Dependability: Fulfilling what I consented to do, even if it means unexpected sacrifice.
- Insight: The ability to know your emotions & how they affect your thoughts and actions.
- Endurance: The inward strength to withstand stress and still do my best.
- Critical-Thinking: The ability to make constructive choices & understand metacognitive strategies to enhance learning.
- Discernment: Understanding the deeper reasons why things happen.
- Discretion: Recognizing and avoiding words, actions, and attitudes that could bring undesirable consequences.
- Mindset: The ability to demonstrate cognitive flexibility & a willingness to learn.
- Tolerance: Realizing that everyone is at varying levels of character development or maturity.
- Regulation/Self-Regulation: The ability to recognize & manage one’s emotions.
- Self-Control: Rejecting wrong desires and doing what is right.
- Obedience: Quickly and cheerfully carrying out the direction(s) of those who are responsible for me.
You are encouraged to talk with your children, our scholars, about what they remember being taught about the aforementioned concepts this school year. Feel free to use “real life” examples of experiences you may have had in helping our children “see” how their choices, behaviors, and academic performance really does matter!! In order for our children to grow, they must understand that having feelings and a range of emotions is natural. However, teaching our children how to communicate, using their words & actions, in positive ways, prepares them for a great future!! Let’s work together to keep our “Home + School” connection & collaboration consistent and strong!!

MASK OPTIONAL
SCEC will be going “mask optional” effective Monday, April 4th. This decision was made in conjunction with the East Chicago Health Department due to decreasing positive Covid-19 cases for Lake County and our State. Though this is great news, you are encouraged to wear mask in certain situations. Individuals that test positive should isolate and should wear a mask when around others at home, in public and at school for an additional 5 days (days 6-10). Because COVID transmission is likely to occur in congregate settings, you are encouraged to wear mask when gathering in close proximity for either a limited or extended period of time. We thank you for your understanding. Further guidance and updates will be provided as they become available.
PLEASE NOTE: PLEASE REFRAIN from throwing masks on the floor or school grounds.
