Principal's Weekly Update
November 5, 2021
FALL BREAK REMINDER
All schools in ECSD will observe a Fall Break this year. Schools will be closed from Thursday, November 11 through Monday, November 15th. Classes will resume on Tuesday, November 16th. We wish you and your family a wonderful and restful break.
WE REMEMBER
Next week, all of our students will receive a poppy. As we take time next week in our school to honor and remember the fallen through observances, activities and prayer, we ask that if you would like to donate to the Veteran Poppy Fund, please send your donation with your child. We look forward to sharing some of our work in honoring our soldiers, our fallen and our history.
SCIENCE 9 EXPERIMENTING AND EXPLORING
Our grade 9 students are actively engaging in scientific exploration as they use observation and logic to identify substances. Working with substances such as baking soda, MSG, sugar, salt, and cornstarch, students collaboratively described and categorized attributes. Following that, they added iodine and water to the substances, resulting in color change that would confirm or disprove their identifications of the substances.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS
Remember to turn your clocks back 1 hour at 2am on Sunday November 7th.
PEACE IS IN OUR HANDS - KINDERGARTEN
Our littlest learners are sharing their thoughts and their understanding of peace. This week, they talked about and engaged in activities that shared how they have peace in their own hands and that is how it can all start. As they work to share their own ideas of peace with each other, they are also sharing their work with the community. This project is entitled Peace is in Our Hands.
GRADE 8-9 BAND
Our talented student musicians are spending hours practicing and learning under the guidance of Mrs. A Narayanan. It is wonderful to listen to the sounds of music coming from our music room. A little secret to share: we are now learning and practicing Christmas music and songs! We are looking forward to sharing our musical talents and offerings with you during the Advent and Christmas seasons.
TRUSTEE THIBERT VISIT
We enjoyed a wonderful visit from our Trustee Laura Thibert this week. Trustee Thibert brought us a gift of a book, Absolutely Nat, for our school as well, always promoting literacy in our students! We were excited to share our new learning spaces with our Trustee, displaying the many ways that we are providing excellent learning opportunities to our students. We hope to welcome Trustee Thibert back to our school often as a marvellous advocate for Catholic Education and for our community of learners.
FOODS NEWS
Our Jr High Foods classes with Mrs. L Johnson are mixing up wonderful food items while learning about kitchen safety, basic cooking techniques and how to serve delicious tasting and looking foods. Last week, our students in grade 8 made and enjoyed french toast as they continue to practice skills in the kitchen.
COLDER WEATHER DRESS
As the days turn colder and we are awaiting the arrival of snow, please remember to ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Layers of clothing are best so that as the day warms, they can remove articles. Please be sure your child has mittens and a hat as well as warm shoes or boots. Students are expected to go outside for recesses if the weather, including wind chill, is below -20 degrees.
