New Dimensions Heads to NYC
Students got to see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Statue of Liberty, and the 9/11 Memorial. They also saw a performance from Blue Man Group and Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Hirschfeld Theatre. Those tourist stops are just a sampling of everything they fit into their NYC experience. They also managed to meet up with a few Hudson alumni!
New Dimensions is a team-taught, interdisciplinary humanities class for seniors. They explore psychology, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology with a literary component for each.
Hudson High School Orchestra Visits Chicago
Trips are in full swing again, as our Hudson High School Orchestra students spent several days visiting the Windy City, Chicago! Students experienced a performance by the world-class Chicago Symphony of Symphony No. 9, Ode to Joy by Ludwig van Beethoven. They also took part in a spirited clinic with a faculty conductor at the Vandercook College of Music. In between, there were visits to The Shedd Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry, plus culinary samplings throughout the trip.
Of course, students also got to see the typical Chicago highlights, such as the Hancock Building observation deck and the Bean! Thank you to the Hudson Music Association for all their assistance with this wonderful student experience.
HHS Student Megan Zhao Wins National Art Award
Congratulations are in order for Hudson High School student Megan Zhao, who has won a Gold National Medal in the 2022 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards! Megan will be invited to the awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City this June. Her winning entry was a digital art titled "Skin on Meat on Bones."
More than 260,000 art and writing entries were submitted to the competition. Of those roughly 2,000, or less than one percent, go on to win a national award.
HMS Helps Orkeeswa School in Tanzania with Fundraiser
Hudson Middle School Student Council spearheaded a fundraiser this month for students in Africa. The fundraiser, Change for Orkeeswa, was organized by Student Council Advisors Annette Blue and Cathy Kantin. The goal: to raise money for the Orkeeswa School in Tanzania and to provide scholarship opportunities for student Witness Julius. Many cultural traditions often keep girls from continuing their academic career.
The entire middle school took part in the healthy competition between communities, which raised a whopping $4,100 for Witness and the Orkeeswa School. In addition, the entire 6th grade had the opportunity to speak via Zoom with two young women who did complete their academics at Orkeeswa School. Both Sioni and Edna are now enrolled in college in the United States. They told HMS students the partnership with Hudson offers a chance at completing higher education and pursuing their dreams.
Hudson Celebrates Right to Read Week With Two Author Visits
In addition to book fairs and guest readers in our classrooms, the district welcomed two amazing authors. Best-selling author Gordon Korman, who has written more than 90 books for kids and teens, including “Masterminds” and “The Unteachables,” spoke to both Hudson Middle School and East Woods Intermediate School.
Meanwhile, children’s picture book author Tammi Sauer, gave entertaining presentations at Ellsworth Hill and McDowell Early Learning School. Sauer has written more than 30 books, including “Chicken Dance” and “Your Alien.” Students and staff thoroughly enjoyed these visits. Our PTO deserves a huge shout out for bringing Korman and Sauer to Hudson. Thank you!
