LIS Weekly
Week of August 21, 2023
A Message from Mrs. Hardwicke
Hello Students and Families,
We hope you had a great first week of school. Everyone seems to be settling into their new classes and routines and our teachers are busy getting to know all of our students. This week, we are going to be able to start eating in our cafeteria. We will still have a limited lunch menu until our kitchen is finished. If your student is bringing a lunch from home, please make sure you label their lunchbox with their name either on the outside or inside so we can identify who it belongs to if it is left behind.
LIS is a transfer spot for busing after school. Each day last week, we were getting faster and faster with transferring students to different buses, boarding LIS students, and leaving the parking lot to head home. We continue to expect this process to become more efficient as everyone is becoming more familiar with their routine and bus numbers each day. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
We hope to see you at our Back-to-School Open House tonight from 5:30-7:30. You will have an opportunity to meet all of your child's teachers and visit their classrooms. Stop by our PTO table to learn how you can support our school, teachers, and students. Also, visit the library if you need help creating a Canvas Observer account.
I hope you have a great week,
Mrs. Hardwicke
Say Something Anonymous Reporting System
Parents & Guardians,
Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported while they are on our campuses every day. The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority -- and requires a proactive approach to violence prevention. That is why the Duneland School Corporation is happy to introduce the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System.
We will be training our students on when and how to use it starting on August 25, 2023.
The Say Something Anonymous Reporting System is a research-based violence prevention program offered by Sandy Hook Promise, a national nonprofit organization. It teaches the warning signs of potential violence or self-harm and provides students and staff with secure ways to share safety concerns through a mobile app, website, or phone call.
Simply put, this program will further enhance the student protections we already have in place.
More than 5,000 schools nationwide have launched this program to date. Administrators and school staff report that their students already feel safer—and lives have already been saved.
We have included information about what the app is, how students can use it, and why we are adopting it in our schools below.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Hardwicke, Principal

Canvas Parent Observer Account
This year, your child will be using Canvas to access materials for their classes and submit assignments. We are asking ALL parents to please sign up as a Parent Observer in Canvas. Parent Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment dues dates, announcements, their student's grades, and other limited course content. There is an app that you can download on your phone to get quick access to Canvas. We will also have a station at Back-to-School Night where staff members can offer any assistance needed in this process.
This corporation link can help you get started.
