Motive Teen Service Summit, Sunday, Oct. 22, 12-4 pm
The Motiv Teen Service Summit will take place on Sunday, October 22, 12-4 pm at the University of San Diego, Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. This free event connects high school students in San Diego to meaningful volunteer service opportunities around San Diego County. Advanced registration is encouraged. Family Notices for the Week:
- The last minimum day for October is 10/25; students are released at 12:30 pm.
- All deliveries to school, including lunches, clothing, items of celebration, etc., must be made thorough the main office for safety reasons; food deliveries are not allowed by anyone other than a parent.
- The SDUSD Choice application is open through November 13 for the 2018-19 school year. If your student already attends Madison via Choice you do not need to take any action. Non-neighborhood families who want to attend Madison in the fall (including non-neighborhood families attending CPMA) must complete the online application before the November 13 deadline. College and Financial Aid Season Opens
The college application and financial season is now open for seniors. Madison counselors conducted presentations about the college application process during Madison's College-bound Symposium on October 11. All seniors received a toolkit of information to help them complete the college application process and financial aid or Dream Act application (deadline is Friday, March 2 for fall 2018. NOTE: Select the 2018-19 school year at www.fafsa.gov). The counselors will hold after school workshops on November 7, 9, 15, 16, 28 and 29, 2:30-3:30 pm, in room 1003 to provide assistance with college applications. The deadline to submit applications for the University of California and California State University systems is Wednesday, November 30. This is a hard deadline for fall enrollment. Students are encouraged to complete all applications by November 17 to ensure counselor help. Please contact your student’s counselor if you have questions or need assistance.
Barrett Stars on Nickelodeon Series
Madison's own LeRoi Armani Barrett is well known to Nickelodeon fans as Byron Patrick in the series I Am Frankie, a television series on Nickelodeon that centers on the character Frankie Gaines (Hook), who looks like a typical teenager, but is actually a cutting edge, experimental android who must hide her true identity to avoid being tracked down by an evil tech company. LeRoi, a junior at Madison, is a multi-talented entertainer who is a skilled singer, dancer, actor and musician. He has performed on stage as a principal player in productions of The Wiz, B.E.A.T. Tour and other plays. He sang in the Youth Choir of San Diego and in the choir at Madison. He was recently interviewed about his passion for acting by the KUSI Good Morning show (pictured above).
CalSOAP College Fair, Wed., Oct. 25 at Scottish Rite Center
The CalSOAP College Fair will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 6:00-8:00 pm at the Scottish Rite Center in Mission Valley (1895 Camino del Rio S., 92108). A bus will leave from Madison for students and parents at 5:30 pm and return by 8:00 pm. Students must sign and return a field trip permission form to the counseling office by October 23 to ride the bus.
Mrs. Fuller will hold a pre-college fair workshop at Madison to help parents and students understand the college fair experience and how to best prepare for the Cal-SOAP College Fair beginning at 4:30 pm in the Student Dining Room. Juniors, seniors and their parents are invited to participate. Dinner and bus transportation to the college fair will be provided. Students should see their their counselor for the permission form to ride the bus. Students/families can also attend the pre-workshop and attend the college fair on their own.
Students are encouraged to apply to at least five colleges or universities to ensure that they are admitted to the school of their choice. The Cal-SOAP college fair is a place to get started. Click here for the flier.
