Math:

We are now in the land of learning fractions. Students have learned about unit fractions and how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. We have made it through lesson 6.3 so far. The plan for the rest of the week is to learn about mixed numbers and take a practice Smarter Balanced test.

Social Studies: We started painting maps this week. Students are working really hard at being Quality Producers on this project. While we paint students are also working on a Postage Stamp illustrates a region in our state. If you have any magazines that you would like to donate to our project please send them in. Also, many students do not have scissors to work on this project. I remember asking for these at the beginning of the year. Can you please make sure your child has a pair of scissors so that they can complete this project?

Reading: Students began the week by reading an article on hurricanes from National Geographic Explorer magazine. They focused on the non-fiction text feature of diagrams, completing one that describes the stages of a hurricane. We will also finish our discussion about firsthand and secondhand accounts. Next, we will continue our work with non-fiction texts by identifying the main idea and details of passages.

Writing: Today students reflected on the writing goal they set at the beginning of the opinion unit. They used the graded rubrics from their three opinion assignments to determine whether they felt they met their goal. They then used this assessment data to set a new goal for the informational writing unit. The opinion assignments will come home with the report cards next Friday. We will now use the research gathered along with our outlines to begin writing our informational books.

Food Drive

The Maple Valley Food Bank needs our help. Can you please send in non-perishable food items or new hygiene items like toothbrushes, deodorant, toothpaste, etc? Families in our area greatly appreciate your support and generosity. The food drive ends this Friday.

FYI - State Testing Dates

Your child will be taking the state tests on the following days:

  • Tuesday May 10th
  • Thursday May 12th
  • Tuesday May 17th
  • Thursday May 19th.

Please plan accordingly as you schedule appointments. Research shows that students perform better when they can test in their classroom learning environment. If students are absent the day of a test, they have to make up the test in another testing location.
