Title I
Is GIA a Title I school?
What does Title I mean?
Title I, Part A is a federally funded program under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The purpose of Title I under the ESSA is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.
Genesis Innovation Academy for Girls and Genesis Innovation Academy for Boys are school-wide Title I schools. GIA uses its allotment of Title I funds to raise the achievement of ALL its scholars. There is a special emphasis on serving the needs of scholars who require additional academic support, beyond standard classroom instruction, to reach their full potential.
What is a Title I Parent Liaison?
Who is GIA's Parent Liaison?
She is married and has two sons who attend GIA; both boys are starting their second year at GIA. In addition to being a busy wife and mother, Mrs. Carswell is the founder of 100 Boys of Code, a non-profit organization which seeks to inspire and empower young boys to pursue a future in computer coding and other STEM fields.
Mrs. Carswell is in her second year as Parent Liaison. She works with GIA's Parent Support Committee, Parent Engagement Committee, as well as the Board of Directors to build a stronger school-family-stakeholder partnership. As Parent Liaison she helped coordinate monthly Scholar of the Month breakfasts, multiple in-school and out-of-school field trips opportunities, and teacher appreciation initiatives.
Ms. Carswell also works to secure partnerships with providers of on-site educational opportunities including Trees Atlanta, the Dunwoody Nature Center, the Chattahoochee Nature Center, the Carter Center Museum, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Those on-site opportunities include summer programs. This past year Mrs. Carswell forged a partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers; NSBE's acclaimed SEEK (Summer Engineering Experience for Kids) program was hosted on the campus of GIA at no cost to girls in grades 3-5. Mrs. Carswell also secures grant funding to provide additional resources for scholars such as sponsorships, enhanced nutrition programs, robotics equipment, gardening programs, free bicycles, and off-site educational excursions.
If parents know of resources and opportunities that could enhance the educational experience at GIA, please connect them with Mrs. Carswell or forward the information. Mrs. Carswell welcomes parents who are willing to work on behalf of their/our scholars by serving on parent committees to help cultivate additional resources. She is deeply committed to creating collaborative partnerships with parents and external organizations to ensure that parents and GIA are equipped with the knowledge and resources to help our scholars succeed.
Mrs. Carswell holds a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in legal studies. She is a proud alumnus of Clark Atlanta University. She has over twenty years of experience working at law firms, corporations, and government agencies in varying roles. She is also a licensed Social Security Disability Representative; a role which allows her to advocate for and represent children and adults before the U.S. Social Security Administration.
