What Are You Thankful For?
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, there is no time better than now for us to pause for a moment and reflect on the many things that we are thankful for. We’ve asked one of our Peer Mentors to share what he’s thankful for, and as you read this through, think of all of the blessings in your life. Happy Thanksgiving!
I am Thankful for…
Article by Sonny Sanchez, Digital Media Peer Mentor
Every time Thanksgiving comes around I feel the need to get closer to family, friends and look back at what I've accomplished. Just a few years ago, I was thankful just to survive deployments to Iraq. A lot has changed since I left the Army. If it wasn't for my wife pushing me to go to college, I would of probably been hating life. I love art, I love creating graphic designs and most of all, I love coming to school. I'm thankful my experience here at Leeward Community College has been an amazing one. I know it's not the same for everyone else, but all you have to do is remind yourself why you started college and continue reaching for your goals. Nothing is easy, that's why it feels great every time you get something accomplished.
I couldn't be more thankful having been taught by amazing instructors and given the opportunity to be a Digital Media Peer Mentor on campus. At times I never thought college would end; Now I'm halfway through my final semester and soon after continuing school as a fashion designer. Graduating means a lot to me. I'm the first of my family to get a degree. I can not believe school it's almost over...for now.
I'm thankful for many reasons, but only have enough space to write three. First, I'm thankful that instructors and staff members were there to help me move forward. Second, I'm thankful we finally got a Veteran's Affairs Office on campus. When I started we had to submit paperwork and have it mailed to the mainland and wait for a reply. Now Leanne takes and the VA staff takes care of everyone. Third, I'm thankful and proud to say that I attended Leeward Community College.

"You CAN Train Your Brain To Get Smarter."
Carol Dweck who pioneered the "Growth Mindset" movement,
has done a ton of research on success as it relates to individuals,
focusing on process vs performance.
The work she has done takes the spotlight off of talent and shines
it more on effort. Research has shown that exposure to this concept
has shifted the thinking in students.
Check out this awesome video about the "Growth Mindset".
