Keeping Up With The Kennedy

February 2, 2020- Issue 20

Mrs. Proctor's Class

Students have been learning about how the sun’s position makes shadows change throughout the day. In this investigation, the kids used flashlights and paper gnomes to explore how moving the position of a light makes shadows move. They discovered shadows can move even when they belong to a stationary object!

Mrs. Huffstutler's Class

Students have been working hard on subtraction with and without regrouping.

Literacy Circle

I am excited at the opportunity to offer a weekly English Language Arts snapshot to JFK families! Check out this section for on-going tips and information specific to Kindergarten & 1st grade, 2nd & 3rd grade, as well as 4th & 5th grade.

This week I just wanted to introduce myself: My name is Jackie Abrams and this is my first year as a Reading Specialist at JFK. I come to Canton Public Schools with 15 years of literacy experience and I am passionate about student engagement and honoring the whole child. I have been fortunate to interact with so many classrooms at JFK already this year! It has been a true pleasure working with your children. I look forward to getting to know the community as well.

Mr. Beck's Health Class

4th grade classes completed a “Medicine Escape Room” where they had to read drug fact labels of empty medicine boxes in order to find the answers to each level. Their final puzzle was to locate the phone number of the Poison Control Center in order to escape.

5th grade students presented their ATOD Unit projects and showed some fantastic creativity. Projects included slideshows, skits, and even a puppet show!

MCAS Schedule

Parents and Families,

Our 2020 Spring MCAS testing dates can be found below. It is important that students be present in school on the days that their grade will be testing. Testing sessions will need to be made up for any student who is absent on a testing day. Please avoid scheduling appointments during your child's MCAS testing dates. We appreciate your support.

Big picture

There have been some recent concerns about cars in the parking lot and the safety of students who are walking home. Please be aware that there is a clear walkway roped off with cones along the side of the fence for walker travel. No one should be parking within the yellow lines. We are also in the process of seeing if we can get additional parking spaces painted in the lot. Thanks for helping us keep our children safe.

Student Demo graphic Sheets

Notices were emailed to parents on the following dates to return student demographic sheets:

The 1st one on 10/22

The 2nd one on 11/15

The 3rd one on 1/28.

We are still missing 109. Please return them ASAP so we can be sure we have current information on students and families. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Notes from the Nurse

As we move through the winter with thoughts of spring and warmer weather, we are reminded that there are a significant amount of coughs, colds and other illnesses going around. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind families and students of the Canton Public Schools Health Guidelines. This provides information about when you should keep your student home, and when it is ok to send them to school. Please take a moment to review this information and feel free to contact the school nurse with questions. If you have any concerns or questions about your child's health, reach out to your child's physician as needed.
