Counselor's Corner

February updates from Mrs. Hight

Diversity

My classroom lessons in focus on our Character Counts pillar of Caring as we celebrate Splash's 7th birthday on February 14th. We will also be talking about diversity. One of our counseling standards is to help students acquire knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to understand and respect themselves and others as well as gain necessary skills to participate in diverse groups.

Here is a fun compilation of videos for younger learners about diversity that even includes some science experiments.

Character Counts

February's trait of the month is Caring

Kindness is represented by the color red.

  • Be Kind
  • Be Compassionate
  • Express gratitude
  • Forgive others

Look for opportunities to show kindness and compassion to those around you like helping someone if they fall down, doing chores without being asked or complimenting others.

Coping Skills

We talk about coping skills everyday in our school. Coping skills are things you can think or do to help you regulate yourself when you're feeling a strong emotion. Here's a great resource to help you talk about big emotions with your children. It breaks the process down into 3 steps.

1. Notice and Identify your Feelings

2. Think about coping skills you can use to feel better.

3. Take action by practicing one or more coping skill.
