Welcome Back to the 2018-2019 School Year!!
Welcome back Churchill Crew! - We have arrived for the new school year. This next week marks the on ramp to a new and exciting school year. We have been working all summer to make plans and arrangements for the year. It has been eerily quiet around these parts up until last week when we had athletics start up and registration days on Thursday and Friday. We were swamped on both days with parents and students getting ready for the new year. When asked if they were excited to be back at school, several grumbled faint disdain, and then erupted in jubilation at seeing their friends close by. Isn't this the case? School is held in abeyance while the friendships that accompany school are rich and rewarding. I'll take it. It warms my heart.
I am so ready to get this year started. While I will miss the weather and the lazy evenings on the river, I am excited to be back in the building connecting with staff and students.
Welcome back!

Tuesday September 4th - 9th Grade Orientation - This is a teacher work day. 9th grade students will be on campus, involved in activities with Lancer Leaders from 8:30am until 12:30pm. Please make yourself available in your rooms to greet new 9th grade students as they make their way around the school. You are also very welcome to come out and join us at the BBQ. Please review Casandra's email for details.
Technology Plan and Updates - We have retired a few of our COWS. Honestly, they were getting on in age and needed to go to pasture. They simply wouldn't function with the demands that were being placed upon them. The good news is that we are expecting a gradual influx of new computers this year that will support or students. The technology department is working with Elementary schools to roll up the Mac Book Airs that are housed at elementary schools and move them into the secondary level. While we may be starting the school year with slightly less that what we ended, we are aiming to end the year in a 1:1 situation. All of this is conditional based on passing the upcoming bond. The incoming COWs will be wrangled into departments across the school on a schedule that keeps equitable distribution in mind.
Syllabi - Please make sure as you prepare your syllabus that you include the following details:
o Contact information for you and your class - email, phone, website,o Course Description
o Content Standards
o Course Objectives - including an outline of what is covered when (course schedule)
o How to get help from you - office hours, others ways to access you and if you require use of technology, how can students access technology in our school.
o Grading criteria - what you grade, when you grade and how you grade
o When you will update on-line grades
o If you don’t put grades on-line, how parents access their students progress
o Final grade criteria- % weight given to quizzes, tests, assignments, etc…
o Classroom policies - Late work, what to do when absent, missed test/quiz, electronic devises, behavior expectations, food, using the bathroom, etc.
o Resources and Materials provided by teacher (course materials)
o Do you offer partial credit and if you do, how does a student access partial credit in your class.
Based on group agreements, please send me a copy of your syllabus, preferably by the end of September.
Attendance - We have a few focus points this year related to attendance. 1) We cannot use attendance to determine grades. All grades must be based on a students demonstration of learning. Attendance cannot factor into the grading equation. 2) It is critical that we take accurate attendance every day in every class. Last year we got ourselves into some very embarrassing scenarios with families that came to pick up their students for family emergencies and we didn't know where the students were. Our attendance in those situations showed that the students were in class, but in reality they hadn't even come to school that day. It is simply a great opportunity to get better at providing service to our families.
Reset your VoiceMail - We need to be sure that we are communicating well with our parents. Please call your own line and hear what it says. Is it you? Let's make sure our voicemail is connected to the right person and helps parents get in touch with the right person.
New Website/Twitter - Make sure you check out our new website. Jill has worked hard this summer to get our school based information into a brand new website. In addition to that we have switched over from our previous Twitter account which was @LancerCave to something that was more connected to Churchill. Our new Twitter handle is @CHSlancers
Student Announcements - We are bringing a new format to some of our announcements this year. We will continue to have our brief loud speaker announcements at the start of 3rd period, but this year we are adding wide screen TV's to the student center and the student lounge that will run power Point slides with the same information so that students will have additional means by which to learn about different activities and events. This is also a means for keeping daily announcements concise and consistent.
OEBB Sign Up - Make sure you go on-line and sign up for your Health Insurance. The window closes September 15th. If you do not sign up you lose it all. They delete you from insurance. Please do this!
Looking Forward

Project Hope - I want to extend a deep and heartfelt thanks to the community members and volunteers that came to CHS last Saturday to contribute their time and energy in making our school beautiful. Thank you so much for your contribution and commitment. We are deeply appreciative. Danielle Benson.
CHS Registration - Huge thank you to the following parents and volunteers who came out to support our registration day. This is a huge event on both days where we process fees, lunch accounts, pictures, graduation caps and gowns, ID cards, and schedules. We wouldn't have been able to pull it off without the help from our counselors, front office staff, Kevin Summerfield, Amanda Dean, Sarah Kirby Ruggiero,
Parent/Staff Volunteers - This list represents the volunteers who signed up to help with Registration. There are a few volunteers whose names did not make it onto the list because they did not sign up ahead of time, but decided to pitch in when they arrived. Know that your contribution is appreciated even though your name is not listed here. Volunteers handed out paperwork and class schedules, accepted payments for fees, checked students in at the portrait station, sold Churchill apparel, answered phones, directed foot traffic, made copies, and generally helped make registration a pleasant experience for staff and families. Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers for the generous gift of your time.

Keith Fjordbeck - Thank you Keith for your commitment to getting the school year up and started. The facilities are in amazing shape and ready for students. All summer long you and your crew worked hard to clean classrooms, wax floors, move teacher classrooms, and set us up for success. Without your support and leadership we would be in a hard way.
