As you begin to discuss college and career options for your student, remember community service hours or volunteer hours can be an important piece of your student’s resume. While BISD does not require any hours to meet graduation requirements, many scholarship applications ask about the number of hours and/or what the student has gained from their experience. Volunteer hours can provide the student with valuable learning and leadership experiences. Student can find themselves having to make on the spot decisions and working out problems as they arise. In many ways, volunteer experiences can resemble on the job training. Students are also recognized at Senior Awards Night, if they have completed and documented at least 25 hours of service. Forms are available on the BHS homepage under Parent/Student. The form must be signed by the sponsor and returned within 30 days of completion to Mrs. Jernigan.
For students who would like the opportunity to learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact the Key Club on campus. Ms. Capaldo is the Key Club Sponsor and they meet every Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. in the Lecture Hall.
Key Club also has a newsletter that showcases the students volunteering and provides information about the club. It can be viewed using the following link:

AVID Staff Spotlight
AVID Staff Spotlight of the Week:
Ted Tomchesson teaches 11th grade U.S. History and coaches the golf team here at BHS. He went to the University of North Texas obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a minor in History. When asked to share one of his favorite memory from college Coach Tomchesson said, “I enjoyed the relationships that I formed and the feeling of accomplishment when it was complete.” When asked, “What skills did you learn in college that you have applied to your personal and professional life?” he replied, “Discipline and self motivation.” When asked, “What advice would you offer to students who are looking to pursue an education after high school?” Coach Tomchesson said, “Have fun and relish the time, but don’t lose focus of the task at hand. The years in college are setting yourself up for the rest of your life. What you do with them could very easily dictate your path and relationships for the future.”

Optimist Club Essay Contest
Motivate ‘em now . . . they’ll apply the rules on the run!
You know the old tenet: “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.”
It’s time to start doing. The Optimist Club’s annual Essay Contest is a time-tested way to prove that doing is the best way to learn. There is no better way for your students to gain command of their language skills than to write. This year, students who enter the Optimist Club Essay Contest are asked to write on "Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges." This is a subject than can be interlaced into your current curriculum.
Need more motivation? Effective this year, the Optimist Club of Fort Worth will award scholarships for winners at the local level. The scholarship awards for this year will be $1000 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for third place. The winner at the local level will be eligible for district competition, where a solo additional first place scholarship award shall be conferred by Optimist International, in the amount of $2500.
