8th Grade Newsletter

Heads up: This month, our 8th grade newsletter was written by students in Mrs. Price’s second period 8th grade English class. We hope you enjoy reading the writing of our students at DMMS about the month of September!

Math 8

Interviewed by: Lucy Gluszak and Emily McClosky

Mr. Tavenner is an 8th grade teacher who teaches Math 8. Currently, he is teaching about consumer math and real world applications. He teaches all about percent change, sales tax, tip, markup, discount, simple interests, how to balance budgets, how to reconcile an account, and how to withdraw money. This is the last thing they are going to do this semester, and math teachers love this unit because it deals with real world topics. Mr. Tavenner is a well liked teacher by the students.

Algebra 1

Ms. Hufgard is a 7th and 8th grade math teacher. She teaches Algebra 1 to 8th graders and Math 8 to 7th graders, and she is a very intelligent and caring teacher who takes time to help each student understand individually. She is currently on unit 6 for both of her classes. For the month of December, she is teaching the Algebra 1 students systems of equations and inequalities and also teaching about identifying angles. She does a very good job juggling both classes by staying organized. She takes every opportunity to make her students feel confident in what they are learning.

Earth Science

Students in Earth Science will spend December learning about the rock cycle. They will do this through a number of strategically planned activities! Students will do labs in order to further their knowledge on the topic. These will include information about various types of rocks such as metamorphic. Assessments will include both labs and quizzes to ensure student comprehension. Fun fact about Ms. Wood: she loves to teach about soil!

Principles of Science

In Principles of Science, students will learn about food chains. This will include understanding food webs in nature and how animals work with and interact with one another to survive. Students will also discuss natural resources: Where do they come from? What are they? How do we use them? Please check in with your students to make sure they do not have outstanding work! In the month of December we will be working on the following objectives:

We will be working on several research standards. We will find out how to research properly and figure out what is usable information without copying it directly from the source. We will be able to decipher if websites are giving us true or false information. That means we will be separating facts from opinions. We will ensure that we are answering questions and prompts without taking those answers directly from the internet. We are going to make sure we can provide support to all researched questions. Students will know what websites are going to be reliable to gather information.

Civics and Economics

In the month of December, Civics and Economics classes will wrap up Q2 by learning about the Executive Branch (President) of the United States. Students will learn about all the different roles the president has during his term. To close out Q2, students will take a benchmark to assess their overall learning of the class. Please check PowerSchool for all updated grades and contact your son and/or daughter Civics teacher with any questions.

Featured Elective: Band

Welcome to the Newsletter about band for December! In band this month, the two main things that are happening are the Winter Concert and District Band Auditions. The Winter Concert will take place on December 7th. In the Winter Concert, the band will play pieces they have been practicing in class for the past few months. District Band auditions will take place on December 10th. The Daniel Morgan Band will be bussed to Kettle Run High School to audition. To audition for District Band, you must have at least one year of experience and be in the district. There will be a performance in a couple of months that people in the District Band will play in. In class, students will continue to work on their concert music before the concert, and after that, they will be practicing new music for the next performance. This sums up what's happening in band this month. Make sure to go to the Winter Concert, for it will be awesome!

El Sr. Tavenner es un maestro de octavo grado que enseña Matemáticas 8. Actualmente, enseña sobre consumo y aplicaciones del mundo real. La Sra. Hufgard es maestra de matemáticas de séptimo y octavo grado. Enseña Álgebra 1 a 8º grado y Matemáticas 8 a 7º grado. Es una maestra muy inteligente y cariñosa que se toma el tiempo para ayudar a cada estudiante a entender individualmente. Para el mes de diciembre, ella está enseñando a los estudiantes de Álgebra 1 sistemas de ecuaciones y desigualdades y también sobre la identificación de ángulos. Electiva Destacada: Banda

¡Bienvenidos a la Newsletter sobre la banda de diciembre! En banda este mes, las dos cosas principales que están sucediendo son el Concierto de Invierno y las Audiciones de Banda del Distrito. El Concierto de Invierno tendrá lugar el 7 de diciembre. En el Concierto de Invierno, la banda tocará piezas que han estado practicando en clase durante los últimos meses. Las audiciones para la Banda del Distrito se llevarán a cabo el 10 de diciembre. La banda de Daniel Morgan será transportada a la Escuela Secundaria Kettle Run para la audición. Para hacer una audición para la Banda del Distrito, debe tener al menos un año de experiencia y estar en el distrito. Habrá una presentación en un par de meses en la que tocará la gente de la Banda del Distrito. En clase, los estudiantes continuarán trabajando en su música de concierto antes del concierto y después de eso, practicarán música nueva para la próxima presentación. Esto resume lo que está pasando en la banda este mes. ¡Asegúrate de ir al Concierto de Invierno, porque será increíble!
