Library Learning
All grades began March by celebrating Read Across America Week. In recent years, this week has focused on creating and celebrating our nation of diverse readers, and on reading books with more diverse characters, storylines, authors, and illustrators.
K-2 students learned about March being Women's History Month and enjoyed the story "Players in Pigtails" by Shana Corey. This book tells about the creation of the first and only Women's Professional Baseball League during World War 2, which included a team from Kenosha called the Comets.
Kinder students began a research project about zoo animals. We read some nonfiction stories about zoo animals and looked at some of the features of nonfiction text. Then we generated a list of zoo animals. We used a random name generator app to choose an animal for each student.
1st graders began a research project about animals that would make unusual pets. After reading a story about pets, we generated a list of animals that would make strange pets. We used a random name generator app to choose a pet for each student.
2nd graders began a research project about states. We read a nonfiction book about Wisconsin and looked at nonfiction text features. Then we used a random name generator app to choose a state for each child.
3rd-5th grade students were introduced and continued to explore using a Padlet as a way to share about great books they read and also as a resource of ideas for books to read in the future.
3rd graders reviewed the elements of historical fiction and listened to a great story titled "Ron's Big Mission" by Rose Blue.
4th graders explored the database Pebble Go Next. They also explored folktales from other countries.
5th graders looked at some of the elements of graphic novels and were introduced to some graphic novel titles that incorporated genres such as historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. They also began to learn about how to share great books that they have read and would recommend to others through BOOKTALKS. In April they will be working on creating their own booktalks.
