February 23, 2016 3:30 – 5:00
Is the interactive read aloud only reserved for literacy?During this session, participants will explore how to integrate components of the interactive read aloud during mathematics to help students made sense of big ideas surrounding addition and subtraction. Participants will leave with 3 interactive read alouds and tasks that can be implemented in the classroom.
March 1, 2016 3:30 - 5:30
Is counting is more than 1, 2, 3? During this session, participants will take a closer look at four critical learning phases surrounding counting for kindergarten students; counting objects, knowing one more/one less, counting objects by groups, and using symbols. Participants will analyze student work samples, assessments, and videos. Participants will leave with strategies and tasks for supporting the range of learners.
March 3, 2016 3:30 - 5:30
Why do students struggle to compose and decompose numbers to 10? Why do students add instead of subtracting? During this session, participants will gain a conceptual understanding of the big ideas and essential understandings for teaching addition and subtraction to grade 1 students. Participants will identify the critical learning phases surrounding number relationships and develop a continuum of understanding. Participants will leave with strategies and tasks for supporting the range of learners.
March 8, 2016 3:30 - 5:00
Why do students struggle to compose and decompose numbers to 20? Why do students to model addition and subtraction using base ten? During this session, participants will gain a conceptual understanding of the big ideas and essential understandings for teaching addition and subtraction to grade 2 students. Participants will identify the critical learning phases surrounding adding two digit numbers and develop a continuum of understanding. Participants will leave with strategies and tasks for supporting the range of learners.
